When seconds mattered, strangers became heroes on a burning stretch of I-94

In 2024, Sam Orbovich, 71, sat unconscious inside his SUV as flames began to consume the vehicle. The crash had already occurred—his car swerved, struck a lamp post and guardrail, and ignited. Trapped and unaware, his chances of survival were slipping away with every passing second.
Then, something remarkable happened.
As the fire raged, a group of strangers made a split-second decision that would change everything. Among them was Kadir Tolla, who didn’t hesitate to stop and rush toward the burning vehicle. He tried to pull Orbovich free, but the door was pinned against the guardrail. Time was running out.
Just then, a Minnesota Department of Transportation responder arrived. Acting quickly, the worker shattered the window. Together, with the help of several others who had stopped, they pulled Orbovich out—feet first—just in time.
Against all odds, Orbovich survived with only minor injuries.
“I am alive today because several good Samaritans and professional first responders saved my life,” Orbovich said of the Thursday night incident. “It is incredibly heroic when people driving down the highway choose to put themselves at risk by running toward the flames to extract a stranger from a burning car that could explode at any moment.”
“My family and I are incredibly grateful for these heroes,” Orbovich said. “I look forward to thanking them all in person.”
