One young man turned the loss of his mother into homes, hope, and a brighter future for hundreds of families
Warrick Dunn is best known as a football star. At Florida State University, he broke school records before going on to play 12 seasons in the NFL. Later this year, he will receive one of college football’s highest honors when he is inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
But Dunn’s greatest legacy may have nothing to do with football.
It began with a tragedy that changed his life forever.
In 1993, Dunn’s mother, Betty Smothers, was killed while working as a security guard. She was also a police officer in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and worked a second job to help support her family.
Dunn was only 18 years old.
Suddenly, he had to help raise his five younger siblings.
“It all fell on me,” Dunn said. “And I just felt like I needed to make sure we had a place that we could actually call home.”
The family had moved several times and lived in rental homes. Dunn understood something important: having a home was about more than having a roof over their heads. It was about having a safe place where children could grow up, celebrate birthdays, make memories, and feel that they belonged.
Dunn used the life insurance money from his mother’s death to buy a home for his family.
“I didn’t have a place that I can actually say, hey, this is where we develop all of our memories as kids growing up,” he said.
That experience stayed with him.
Turning Pain Into Purpose
When Dunn began his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he decided to help other families experience something he had wanted for his own family.
During his first season, he established the Homes for the Holidays program.
The idea was simple but powerful: help single parents become homeowners.
Over the years, the program has helped hundreds of single-parent families across 16 states. Families have received assistance with down payments, furniture, and even food to stock their new kitchens.
Dunn wasn’t simply giving people houses.
He was helping families build a foundation for their future.
One mother named Trista received help from Dunn’s program just before Thanksgiving in 2002. She described receiving her home as the happiest time of her life.
Her story, however, also shows that life doesn’t always follow a simple path.
After the housing market crashed, her neighborhood became dangerous. Instead of giving up, Trista held on to the home and eventually used the equity she built in it to buy the house where she lives today.
Her journey demonstrates one of the most important ideas behind Dunn’s work: homeownership can be the beginning of something much bigger.
Building Generational Wealth
For Dunn, helping a family buy a home isn’t just about giving someone a place to live today.
It can help create opportunities for tomorrow.
A home can provide stability for children. Over time, it can also become an important financial asset that can be passed from one generation to the next.
Dunn understands that creating generational wealth doesn’t happen overnight.
“It takes a little bit to build that generational wealth, but this is where you start,” he said.

But his greatest victory may be measured differently: the number of families he’s given a chance to build a better future.

Dunn lost his mother when he was just 18. He could have allowed that tragedy to become the end of his story.
