A Proud Moment for the Philippines on the Slopes
When the world’s greatest winter athletes gathered for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, Filipino-Italian alpine skier Francis Ceccarelli stepped onto the slopes with excitement, pride, and determination. For the 22-year-old athlete, simply reaching the Olympic stage was already a remarkable achievement — one that many athletes spend their entire careers chasing.
Competing in alpine skiing’s giant slalom and slalom events, Ceccarelli found himself racing against some of the best skiers in the world, including Olympic medalists and seasoned veterans. For a young athlete representing a tropical country rarely associated with winter sports, the moment was both surreal and inspiring.
“For me, this experience is 9 to 10 because, yeah, the sensation is good, the feel is good, only the weather [was] really difficult… It’s okay. The next time we can make it to the top 50 [in the world],” he said in an online interview.
Despite challenging weather and difficult race conditions, Ceccarelli delivered a solid performance. He finished 54th out of 81 competitors in the men’s giant slalom, an impressive showing considering the world-class competition. In the slalom event, he recorded a DNF (did not finish) after crashing during the race, as rough conditions led many athletes to struggle on the course.
Still, Ceccarelli focused on the positives — the thrill of competing and the honor of representing his roots.
“This experience [is] like a beautiful moment, because you start to compete with a big athlete, like the top in the world. I mean, every athlete wants to participate for Olympic Games. And it was my first time. And I’m really happy and so really proud of my work and my races. And such a beautiful experience,” Ceccarelli added.
More than just a personal milestone, the Olympics were also a moment of national pride for Ceccarelli. Born with Filipino heritage, he embraced the responsibility of carrying the Philippine flag onto the world stage.
“For me, representing the Philippines, for me, it’s an honor. Because it’s my country, it’s my country’s favorite, you know, where I was born. Like yeah, I’m so really emotional and so really proud to participate for my country and my flag… I hope the next time makes the best and can make a better one,” he shared.
After the races ended, Ceccarelli did not take long to refocus. Inspired by the athletes he competed against and the atmosphere of the Winter Games, he quickly returned to training, determined to improve and return stronger.
“I want to continue [competing] because we are young. Yeah, I will keep training, training, [and joining] races. I mean, this is work. We continue,” he said.
Ceccarelli also hopes his Olympic journey will inspire more young Filipinos to dream beyond the tropics and explore winter sports.
“I mean, for the next gen [of] Filipinos, I want to tell [them], always believe in your dreams and really never give up because it’s important. You work really, really hard [to be] in the moment,” he said.
“I know it’s really difficult, and it’s really stressful, but if you really want to [reach your] dreams, you know it’s real, push it, push it. And so really never give up because one day, the big events, it’s really make it to fun in one day in the future,” Ceccarelli shared.
Back home, Philippine sports leaders continue to support the nation’s presence at the Winter Games. Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino, president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, emphasized that the country’s participation in winter sports is part of a long-term commitment. Alongside organizations like the Philippine Sports Commission, they aim to keep the Philippine flag visible in future Winter Olympics.
Though the Philippines has yet to win a Winter Olympic medal, the journey continues — one race, one athlete, and one dream at a time.
Francis Ceccarelli’s Olympic debut proves that the spirit of sport has no climate limits. A tropical nation like the Philippines competing on icy slopes shows the power of determination and identity. Even without a medal, Ceccarelli’s courage, pride, and optimism make his journey meaningful. If athletes like him continue pushing forward, the day may come when the Philippine flag rises on the Winter Olympic podium.
