Teamwork Beyond the Game Brings Meals, Joy, and Hope to Local Families #BurghProud
The spirit of Thanksgiving isn’t just about turkey and pumpkin pie—it’s about gratitude and giving back. On Tuesday, Pittsburgh’s professional sports teams came together once again. The Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates embodied that spirit through the #BurghProud Thanksgiving dinner distribution.
For the fourth consecutive year, these iconic organizations collaborated with Giant Eagle. They also partnered with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Together, they provided meals for local families in need. It was a heartwarming show of teamwork beyond the game. Volunteers gathered on Mazeroski Way, just outside PNC Park. They distributed turkeys, side dishes, desserts, and gift cards to 300 families.
Breaking Stigma, Building Community
This event is about more than just food; it’s about fostering dignity and hope. Brian Gulish is the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. He highlighted how beloved sports teams’ involvement helps dismantle the stigma surrounding food assistance.
“When families pull up, they see players or mascots from their favorite teams. This makes the experience joyful rather than intimidating,” Gulish explained. “It’s not just about filling bellies but putting smiles on faces and creating a welcoming environment.”
Smiles abounded as kids in car seats lit up at the sight of mascots and players. It turned a somber experience into one filled with warmth and cheer.
A Shared Mission of Giving
Representatives from all three teams eagerly participated, from Pirates President Travis Williams to current and former players. Williams reflected on the significance of the event during the holidays:
“The holidays are about families coming together. For us, it’s about making sure every family can enjoy that tradition, regardless of their circumstances.”
Steelers linebacker Nick Herbig echoed this sentiment. He emphasized the importance of giving back to the community. This community has been steadfast in its support for Pittsburgh’s sports teams.
“It’s not just about the game,” Herbig shared. “It’s about showing up for the people who show up for us.”
More Than a Meal
Beyond the distribution at PNC Park, the spirit of giving extended further. Steelers quarterback Justin Fields hosted a Thanksgiving dinner at the 412 Youth Zone, ensuring that more families enjoy the season. Meanwhile, tight end Pat Freiermuth brought Thanksgiving cheer to over 50 children. He also brought joy to their families at the Carnegie Boys and Girls Club. He expressed his commitment to making community outreach a tradition throughout his career.
“For me, it’s about impact beyond the field,” Freiermuth said. “I remember looking up to athletes when I was a kid. To now be in that position and make a difference—it’s incredible.”
Gratitude in Action
As former Pirates pitcher Steve Blass put it, the event is a way to say thanks. It is a gesture to a community that has shown unwavering support over the years.
“It’s a feel-good thing,” Blass said. “We’ve been welcomed here for so long. Now it’s our turn to give back.”
Pittsburgh’s Thanksgiving meal distribution is a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose. The Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates reminded us of community power. They showed kindness and the importance of giving back in a season centered on gratitude.
This Thanksgiving, the Steel City doesn’t just celebrate with its teams—it thrives because of them.
