Turning Trauma into Triumph
Bullying is a painful reality for many children, but when a community comes together, it can turn sorrow into strength. In Bakersfield, California, a disturbing video surfaced online. It showed middle schooler Carter Lashaul being tormented by high school students. The case captured national attention. But then something extraordinary happened. An act of kindness helped restore his confidence. It reminded the world that compassion still exists.
“Woah…that’s a Corvette.”
Carter, a young car enthusiast, woke up to an incredible surprise. Dozens of luxury vehicles lined up outside his home. They were ready to take him to school in style. After enduring a horrific bullying incident where he was forced to lick another student’s shoe, Carter was understandably shaken. Ameer Hammad worked with Porsche Bakersfield to lift Carter’s spirits. They aimed to send a strong message against bullying.
“Each and every one of us has been through something like that and because of that I wanted to show Carter that he’s special and bullying has no place here,” said Hammad. “No kid should ever have to go through that and be robbed of their smile and happiness, every kid deserves to be happy.”
Carter, overwhelmed with joy, couldn’t believe what was happening. “I was pretty excited and that’s when I saw a Corvette, so I was really happy,” he shared. “It’s fun and it’s pretty cool that a lot of people showed up for me.”
But the generosity didn’t stop there. Carter received a brand-new iPhone. His neighbor, Anna Zendejas, started a GoFundMe campaign. It raised nearly a thousand dollars to support him.
A Mother’s Heartfelt Plea
Zendejas, deeply moved by the incident, expressed her sorrow and determination to make a change. “Me as a mom when I seen it, I cried, because I would never want my daughter to go through something like this. So knowing it was one of her friends, it really touched home,” she said.
With his backpack in hand, Carter’s journey to school that day was unlike any other. Riding in a McLaren, he arrived with his head held high—proving that kindness can overshadow cruelty.
Taking a Stand Against Bullying
The viral video of Carter’s bullying sparked outrage. It led his sister, Mariah Washington, to organize a protest outside Golden Valley High School. “I’m not letting my brother be more publicly exposed or humiliated, so I’m going to speak up on his behalf,” she declared.
Students, parents, and community members rallied together to stand against bullying. “In this type of situation, I feel like it’s very heartwarming that people do come out and support, and to let it be known that it’s not okay to bully, at all,” said Azorea Cooper, a senior at Golden Valley High School.
The Kern High School District issued a statement condemning the bullying and assured the community of their commitment to student safety. Meanwhile, the Bakersfield Police Department took swift action, arresting the 14- and 15-year-old boys involved in the incident. They were booked into juvenile hall on charges of battery, false imprisonment, and conspiracy.
A Call for Change
While justice is being pursued, the community continues to call for better parenting and education to prevent future incidents. “That’s where us parents have to step in and teach our kids that it is not okay to bully, it’s not okay to make comments, or to make anybody feel that way,” Zendejas emphasized.
Local resident Alaniz echoed the sentiment, saying, “My initial response is to always protect the kids I guess, regardless if they’re mine or not. Bullying is an absolute no for me, so if I’m able to put a stop to it, I mean, I will.”
Carter’s family remains grateful for the overwhelming support but asks for continued prayers as he heals from the ordeal. While this event doesn’t erase what happened, it marks the beginning of a journey toward healing and hope.
