Defying Age with Passion and Perseverance
In a world where age often dictates the limits of physical activity, Jacinto Bonilla, the “grandfather of CrossFit,” is redefining those boundaries. On July 3rd, while many celebrate with cake and relaxation, Bonilla heads to the gym, embodying the mantra that age is just a number.
At 78 years old, Bonilla has become a legend in the CrossFit community, renowned for his relentless birthday workout tradition. Since his 69th birthday, he has challenged himself with a grueling regimen known as the “Jacinto Storm.” This workout includes 78 repetitions of double-unders, squats, push-ups, chin-ups, wall ball shots, kettlebell swings, and deadlifts with a 90-pound weight, each exercise reflecting his current age.
Bonilla’s story is a powerful testament to the human spirit’s resilience and determination. Featured in the “Ageless” series, which highlights seniors passionately pursuing their interests, Bonilla stands out for his dedication to fitness and his ability to inspire others. At 80 years old, he candidly shared his lifelong commitment to exercise, attributing his vitality to his active lifestyle.
“I don’t believe I’m 80,” Bonilla remarked, expressing his disbelief at his own age. Unlike many of his peers, he remains remarkably agile and independent, a testament to his lifelong fitness obsession. “I’m glad because of the way I feel today. I don’t ever want to have anybody take care of me.”
Bonilla’s journey with CrossFit began in 2006 when he sought a new challenge to keep him motivated. Over the past 14 years, he has continued to push his limits, often outperforming much younger participants in his classes. His dedication is evident in his daily routine; he walks two and a half miles to the gym, completes his intense workout, and then walks back home, proving that his determination knows no bounds.
Bonilla’s influence extends beyond the gym. Diana, a fellow CrossFitter, shared how she and her 6-year-old son were inspired by Bonilla’s dedication and welcoming spirit. “Bonilla makes you feel like you’re part of his family,” she said, highlighting the supportive and inclusive environment he fosters.
For Bonilla, the idea of stopping is inconceivable. His advice to older adults considering fitness is simple yet profound: “You’re never too old to get into fitness. I’m gonna keep working out until the end of my life — until I am no more. If you love doing something… you won’t stop.”
Jacinto Bonilla’s story is more than just a tale of physical fitness; it is a powerful reminder that passion, perseverance, and a positive mindset can defy the constraints of age. He continues to inspire countless individuals, proving that with the right attitude, age truly is just a number.
