When asked to lose even more weight just to stay in rugby, Mailata realized the cost was too high. “They wanted me to lose 15 more kilos. It was impossible because I was at 10 percent body fat,” he said. “That wasn’t healthy at all, but I laugh at it now.”
Walking away from rugby league, Mailata took a leap of faith into American football through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. With no prior experience, he chose offensive tackle after seeing the position highlighted in The Blind Side. Coaches quickly recognized what technique could not yet show: rare athleticism, immense strength, and a relentless work ethic.
Drafted 233rd overall by the Eagles in 2018, Mailata endured injuries and growing pains before finally getting his chance. Once he stepped into the starting lineup in 2020, he never gave the job back. He developed into one of the league’s premier left tackles and was rewarded in 2022 with an $88 million contract—a staggering leap from the $5,000 deal he once turned down.
Now a veteran leader and cornerstone of the Eagles’ offense, Mailata stands one game away from a Super Bowl title. His story is no longer just about football, but about resilience, reinvention, and believing in a different path when the original dream fades.
