A West Lothian family turns a heartfelt promise into a once-in-a-lifetime journey to cheer on Scotland in the USA
Young football fan Aaron Wilson experienced a Christmas he will never forget after unwrapping a surprise that felt straight out of a storybook. The nine-year-old from West Lothian discovered he was heading to the World Cup in the United States, thanks to his parents, Stuart and Kerri, who decided to turn a long-standing promise into reality.
Aaron had been desperate to follow Scotland after their memorable victory over Denmark, a result that had sparked celebrations across the country. Although the costs of flights, hotels, and tickets initially gave his parents pause, Aaron’s mature and understanding reaction convinced them that the dream was worth pursuing.
“It was great to watch him open the package, knowing what was inside and knowing it would be a big surprise for him. It was a bit of a ‘golden ticket’ moment, and the family all enjoyed it.”
“I told Aaron that if we beat Denmar,k we’d go to the World Cup – then I had a look at the cost and thought it might be a bit too much.
“So I then had to have another conversation with him, telling him the trip might be out of reach and he’d have to wait until Scotland qualified for a tournament closer to home.
“I expected a petulant response, as you might get from a nine-year-old, but he was great. He just accepted it and said he understood, even though I think he was holding back the tears.”
When Stuart mentioned he might have to travel alone, Aaron’s quiet response helped seal the decision.
“That was a bit heartbreaking, and I think I knew then what the right thing to do was.”
Despite being unwell on Christmas Day, Aaron’s joy was unmistakable when he opened a Scotland jersey and tracksuit, followed by a handmade card designed to look like a boarding pass to Boston and Miami. On the back, a message made it clear this was a journey they would share.
“Aaron, I couldn’t go without you. We’re going to the World Cup!”
“I couldn’t get away from the fact I’d made a promise, so the result is that I’ll be taking him to Boston and then on to Miami, and we really can’t wait.
“The trip will cost a fortune, but we decided it will be worth making a big dent in our savings because there will be memories that will last a lifetime, no matter what happens in the tournament.”
With tickets still dependent on a FIFA ballot, the family remains hopeful.
“That element is up in the air, and I’m hoping we get sorted, so it’s fingers crossed.”
For Aaron, who plays locally for Blackburn United 2016, the experience already feels surreal.
“I’m really, really excited about going to the World Cup,p and it’s like a dream come true.
“I didn’t know what I would be getting on the day, but it’s the best Christmas ever.”
Stories like Aaron’s remind us that the greatest gifts aren’t found in boxes but in shared experiences. When parents choose memories over money, they create moments that shape a child’s life forever—and that kind of magic is worth every sacrifice.
