Daley Blind celebrates with his father Danny after scoring for the Netherlands against the USA
There was a heartwarming moment in the first round-of-16 match of the FIFA World Cup between the Netherlands and the USA in Doha.
As soon as Netherlands’ Daley Blind slotted in the second goal in the end minutes of the first half against the USA, he rushed to the Dutch team bench and celebrated the goal with his father Danny Blind who is one of the assistant coaches of the team.
Danny Blind, a former Dutch player, previously coached the Netherlands team, between July 2015 and March 2017.
Danny has played in two world cups for the Netherlands (1990 and 1994) and has coached the Netherlands for two years since 2015. He is now an assistant coach with the head coach of the Netherlands national team, Louis Van Gal.
“He was busy with his work. I said nothing. I grabbed him. I know he’s very down to earth and doesn’t want to show too much of the father-son moment. But we do enjoy it together. So much emotion comes out and sometimes you act a little weird. It’s pure emotion. I don’t score that often and if you can be important to the team at such a time, that’s fantastic. It is of course also great for yourself to score at a World Cup,” Daley said at the mixed zone after the game.”
Three years ago, Daley Blind had been diagnosed with a heart condition. He has been fitted with a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator that regulates abnormal heart rhythms.
