From Mexico to Milano, one skater proves that passion can overcome every barrier
When he first stepped onto the ice as a young boy in Mexico, Donovan Carrillo discovered something that would shape his entire future. In a country better known for soccer and warm weather than winter sports, the idea of becoming a world-class figure skater seemed unlikely. Yet for Carrillo, it marked the beginning of a dream that would eventually take him to the Olympic stage.
At the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, Carrillo made history as Mexico’s first male Olympic figure skater in 30 years. Now he is preparing to compete again at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, returning to the Olympic spotlight while carrying the pride of his nation. This time, the moment carries even more meaning, as he has also been given the honor of serving as Mexico’s Opening Ceremony flagbearer for the second time.
Standing in the Olympic Village before the ceremony began, the emotion of the moment was overwhelming.
“Right before Mexico was called into the Opening Ceremony, my heart was beating so fast, and my emotions were so high – it was like I was about to compete.”
Carrillo understands that every performance he delivers on Olympic ice represents more than his own career. It represents a possibility for young athletes in Mexico who may never have imagined themselves competing in winter sports.
“I hope I’ve shown the world that Mexicans can achieve big goals, like making it to the Olympic Winter Games, and inspired people in Mexico to fight for their dreams.”
“When you’re crazy enough, and you work hard enough, you can achieve amazing things.”
Milan: A City of Memories
For Carrillo, the city of Milan holds powerful memories that helped shape his journey.
In 2018, he competed there at the World Championships as one of the youngest athletes in the competition. It was a surreal experience for him, as he skated against athletes he had admired for years while watching them on television.
Against the odds, Carrillo reached the final round, becoming the first Mexican male skater to qualify for the free skate. That breakthrough moment changed everything. From that point forward, more people began to believe in his potential, and increased support from his country helped transform his career.
Returning to Milan years later feels deeply meaningful for him.
“I’m having the best time of my life.”
Breaking Barriers on and off the Ice
Carrillo’s path has never been easy. Growing up in Mexico, he faced cultural expectations that often discouraged boys from pursuing artistic sports like figure skating.
“When I was a kid, the mentality in Mexico was that men shouldn’t practise artistic sports.”
Despite the criticism, Carrillo continued pursuing his passion with the encouragement of his parents, who supported his desire to explore the sport. Over time, skating became far more than competition for him—it became a powerful form of personal expression.
“Figure skating has helped me understand how to express my emotions through movement and to grow as a person. I feel like myself when I’m on the ice.”
Financial challenges also made the road to the Olympics extremely difficult. Training, travel, coaching, and competition expenses created major obstacles for an athlete coming from a country with limited winter sports infrastructure.
Still, Carrillo refused to give up.
The Power of Support
Today, Carrillo trains in Toronto, working with top coaches while continuing to refine every detail of his performance. Scholarships and international support programs have played a critical role in helping him continue his Olympic journey.
“The help from Olympic Solidarity: I honestly don’t know where I would be without it.”
That support allows him to focus entirely on improving his skating rather than worrying about how to fund his dream.
“It makes a huge difference, because as an athlete it’s hard to have a job and compete at the Olympics against the best people in the world.”
“So, to have these programmes and this help from the IOC allows us to focus on our dreams, on our sport.”
“It really changes an athlete’s life.”
Donovan Carrillo’s story shows that the Olympic spirit is about far more than medals. His journey reflects courage, perseverance, and the willingness to believe in a dream that once seemed impossible. By stepping onto Olympic ice, he has not only made history for Mexico but also opened the door for future athletes who now know that even in a warm country, a winter dream can come true.
