Twin Brothers’ Compassion Shines Bright in Halloween Fundraiser for Hurricane Michael’s Victims
In 2018, twin brothers Avery and Kennedy Cole from Sarasota, Florida, demonstrated the true spirit of Halloween by reaching out to those affected by Hurricane Michael. Their heartwarming initiative began during the morning announcements at Lakeview Elementary, where they addressed their fellow students about the devastation suffered by Bay Haven Charter Academy in the Panhandle.
“The school was devastated by Hurricane Michael. We want to help them rebuild, here’s how you can help,” expressed Avery, rallying their fellow students.
Kennedy further explained the plan: “You will receive one of these forms from your teacher. Cut out the labels on the bottom, tape it to containers like this one. Take the container with you when you go trick-or-treating and ask people to donate loose change to help people affected by Hurricane Michael.”
The twins had witnessed the harrowing images of destruction in the Panhandle on the evening news, stirring a deep sense of empathy within them.
“I felt very sad for them,” said Kennedy, reflecting on those affected.
Their compassion sparked a genuine desire to contribute, and they turned to their teacher, Victoria Theiler, for guidance. She commended the brothers, recognizing them as strong role models who displayed a genuine initiative to help others. Kennedy, in fact, held the position of president in the school’s newly established Kindness Club.
With the Halloween fundraiser, these 10-year-olds aimed to raise $1,000. As Avery aptly puts it, “I want them to feel like someone else cares besides their family and friends.”
Kennedy shared his sentiments, emphasizing that in times of adversity, solidarity knew no bounds. “We all can go through tough times together. Just because we don’t know each other doesn’t mean we don’t care for each other. We can help people all over the world.”
Theiler echoed the sentiment of pride in her students, expressing a wish for more young minds like Kennedy and Avery in the world.
As a testament to their dedication, the twins concluded their morning announcement with a powerful reminder: “Remember … be kind.”
In addition to their grassroots campaign, a family friend established a GoFundMe page for the school in Panama City. With a goal of $5,000, they have already raised close to $1,000, offering a beacon of hope for the institution’s recovery.
As the twins embarked on their Halloween trick-or-treating journey, they hoped their benevolent idea would inspire other families to join them in assisting the hurricane victims on their arduous path to recovery.
