Refurbished Chairs, Restored Faith: A Secret Samaritan’s Christmas Surprise
College life often requires creativity, resilience, and hope—and sometimes, it gifts you a moment of pure magic. In 2020, University of New Mexico student Conrad Duran and his girlfriend Andrea learned just how powerful a small act of kindness could be.
Struggling to furnish their home on a student budget, the couple had picked up two worn-out dining chairs from the curb, hoping to fix them up themselves. “So whenever we find furniture that’s in good condition, or even if it’s in rough shape, I usually like to try and fix it up a little bit. I did find them a little bit down my street and decided to pick them up,” said Duran. “I just grabbed them and left them outside of my garage door which is really not that close to the curb, then I had to go to work.”
But after working a double shift on Christmas Eve, Duran returned to find the chairs gone. With disappointment and resignation, he assumed they had been stolen. “I’ve gotten a few items stolen from me over the years living here, ever since I moved here,” he said. “It’s one of those things where you come to terms with it.”
However, Christmas had one more surprise in store.
Returning home after a holiday trip to visit family, Duran and Andrea were stunned to find the chairs had returned—but they were completely transformed. “I thought they had been stolen and lo and behold, they had just taken them, redid them, and returned them as a Christmas gift or something like that,” said Duran. “Now they just look absolutely beautiful.”
Alongside the beautifully refurbished chairs was a heartfelt note encouraging kindness and generosity. This anonymous gesture left the couple deeply moved and grateful.
After a difficult year, that moment of thoughtfulness served as a reminder of the good that still exists in the world. The identity of the kind neighbor remains a mystery, but their gift made a lasting impact. Duran and Andrea now hope others will be inspired to carry that same spirit forward.
