Costumed Surfers Ride the Waves to Support Kahuku High
When Halloween meets the ocean, the result is pure magic! The fifth annual Turtle Bay Halloween Surf Off, presented by the Jamie O’Brien Surf Experience, is ready to make waves on Oahu’s North Shore. The event will be held on Saturday, October 25, at The Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Organizers said that all ages and skill levels are welcome to join in on the fun, dressing in their best costumes and competing for “glory, laughs, and prizes.”
Jamie O’Brien, the event’s host and a proud Kahuku High School graduate, shared his excitement:
“This event brings together everything we love — community, fun, creativity, and the ocean,” said Jamie O’Brien. “It’s not every day you see a pirate dropping in on a wave next to a taco. That’s the kind of Halloween wonder we’re all about and we’re psyched to keep the tradition going, while supporting our local scholastic surfers.”
Competitors will be judged not only on their surfing skills but also on how creative their costumes are. And it’s all for a good cause — the proceeds go directly to Kahuku High’s surf team.
“It’s about bringing the community together,” O’Brien said. “And then most importantly, trying to raise money for the Kahuku High School Surf Team. It’s just a really good event. Family-friendly, fun, and everyone dresses up in costumes and just celebrates the holiday season.”
The contest has three divisions:
Tandem Division (all ages)
Goblin Division (14 and under)
Open Division (15 and older)
Winners in each category will receive awesome prizes like custom-made trophies by a local artist, a round of golf at Turtle Bay Golf, gift certificates to North Shore Surf Shop, and even an overnight stay at The Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay!
With the help of “so many epic sponsors,” O’Brien said this year’s Surf Off will raise a record-breaking amount for young surfers in the community.
This event is a perfect blend of Hawaiian spirit, surfing, and Halloween creativity. It’s inspiring to see athletes using their talents to give back to local schools — and doing it while wearing costumes! Who wouldn’t want to see a ghost catching a wave next to a taco? The Turtle Bay Halloween Surf Off proves that community, fun, and giving can all ride the same wave.
