A man knocks on her door and invites himself in. She seems indifferent when she first sees him, asking “Hi, how are you?” However, the next four words he says change everything: “Do you recognize me?”
This question makes her look a little more closely at the man, and when she realizes it’s her son, she can’t contain her excitement! “Joey… you’re my Joey!” she says as she touches and kisses her son’s face. To top it off, the video ends with the most heartfelt hug ever.
“My brother surprised mom for her 90th birthday,” says the text on the video. The man coming to visit his mother on her 90th birthday. The woman suffers from dementia.
“I would have passed out from crying,” an Instagram user commented. “Aww so many of us can relate to this. What a special moment… Happy Birthday!! Joey what an awesome moment with your mom,” posted another user. “Aww made me cry, so lovely,” said a third.
Watching your parents grow older and become like the children they had once taken care of is heartbreaking. But this is called the circle of life. And conditions like dementia or Alzheimer’s make it worse.
More than 50 million people (about twice the population of Texas) around the world have dementia. It is a progressive or chronic condition that leads to deterioration in cognitive function. Dementia affects memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgment, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The only thing a patient with dementia can be given is a lot of care and support from the people around them.
