Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Maumee’s Snow Brigade Steps Up
Northwest Ohio residents are no strangers to winter. Yet, it has been a while since Maumee has experienced the snow that requires shoveling. The recent snowfall only amounted to a few inches. But, the risk of slipping and falling is too great for many seniors. It is also too great for homebound individuals.
That’s why over a dozen Maumee neighbors came together on Saturday. They offered their time, muscles, and equipment to shovel sidewalks and driveways.
“I enjoy helping out the community when I can, and I got this nice snow blower that needs to be used,” said volunteer Jeff Farthing.
The snow brigade was organized by the City of Maumee and managed to clear snow from around 20 homes. Volunteers say it’s an honor to serve the community in this way. They see their efforts as a means to foster goodwill among residents.
“I think it’s a good way to promote goodwill among Maumee people. And just helping each other out and for the betterment of our community,” said volunteer Mark Irmen.
The initiative is intended for Maumee residents who are homebound or seniors in need of assistance. Inspired by similar programs in other cities, Maumee City Council President Gabriel Barrow explained how the idea came to life.
“I know other cities have had little programs like this. So we heard about it. We thought it would be a good idea, put it on our website. And it’s really helpful and it’s fun,” said Barrow.
For the volunteers, this initiative is about more than just shoveling snow. It’s a way to give back, stay active, and create a stronger community bond.
“I love it. It’s good for the community, and it’s good for senior citizens, people in need. We’re, you know, people out here that are willing to help,” said Farthing.
As winter continues, the Maumee snow brigade stands ready to help those in need. This proves that a little kindness and teamwork can go a long way.
