Mary Wade: Transforming Ordinary Bricks into Symbols of Unity and Patriotism
In the early hours of July 4th, 2013, some residents of east Louisville woke up to a heartwarming and patriotic surprise. An 80-year-old neighbor, Mary Wade, had been quietly working on a project that has brought joy and unity to the community.
Mary Wade isn’t your average retiree. With a passion for painting and a love for her country, she has taken on a unique hobby that combines both. For several years now, Wade has dedicated a significant portion of her time to transforming ordinary bricks into vibrant tributes to the American flag.
The process is meticulous. “After they’re washed, we bring them over here to dry,” Wade explains. “After they dry overnight, I put them on this table and put two coats of paint, I draw the pattern and put two coats of paint on them.” This routine might seem arduous to some, but for Wade, it’s a labor of love. Despite her age, she spends about 30 to 40 hours a week on this endeavor.
Wade’s dedication is impressive. “If I can do 16 a day for five days a week,” she says, “I only give myself five days a week because I figure well maybe I have a doctor’s appointment or maybe I just want to do something else. That’s 80 a week. Maybe 320 a month.” Her methodical approach ensures a steady output, allowing her to spread her patriotic art far and wide.
The inspiration for this project dates back to 2010. It began with a single brick, painted as a gift for a friend. “I made her a flag, and I snuck it over there and put it on the porch,” Wade recalls. The gesture was met with enthusiasm, and soon, others wanted their own painted bricks. “Someone knew it and they said ‘Oh I’d like to have one,’ so I made them one.” And just like that, a simple act of kindness blossomed into a community-wide initiative.
Over the past three years, Wade’s patriotic project has grown brick by brick. Her artwork has not only beautified the neighborhood but also fostered a sense of togetherness among the residents. “I’ve got a lot of people who say it’s bringing them together,” Wade says with a smile.
This story of Mary Wade and her painted bricks is a testament to the power of small acts of kindness. It highlights how one person’s dedication and love for their community can create ripples of positivity and unity. As we celebrate our nation’s independence, let’s also celebrate the unsung heroes like Mary Wade, whose quiet contributions make our communities a better place.
