How Jason Levinthal Fooled the Skiing World
If you thought April Fools’ Day jokes were reserved for harmless pranks, think again—because J Skis went all in. Jason Levinthal is the mastermind behind the brand. He convinced the internet that Tesla-powered skis were real. The skis featured a sleek Tesla emblem on the topsheets. They came with a perfectly crafted backstory.
With a straight face, Jason explained: “J Skis just builds the skis, and Tesla designed the motor.” Imagine effortlessly gliding uphill while traditional skiers huffed and puffed. And, of course, enjoying the soothing electric hum disrupting the peaceful backcountry air.
Skiers eager to buy the futuristic gear were met with an unexpected twist. They clicked the buy link and were led straight to a bright yellow April Fools’ Day message. Some were entertained, while others were downright mad. One disgruntled Instagram user commented:
“It’s funny that you wasted a week of your life making this idiotic video, just so you could post it on April Fools.”
Jason, never one to break character, fired back: “I wish it only took a week! We’ve been working on this for 2 years now around the clock. Definitely exhausting in addition to all my usual responsibilities running J Skis, but well worth it in the long run for the benefit of the sport!”
J Skis: The Kings of Ski Pranks
J Skis isn’t new to ski-related shenanigans. The brand has a history of epic pranks. It unveiled Velcro ski bindings in a shockingly convincing product video years ago. Now, there’s this latest Tesla-powered ski stunt.
Founded by freeskiing legend Jason Levinthal, J Skis has always been about making skiing “more funner.” Levinthal created LINE Skis in the ‘90s. He later worked at K2 Sports, where he launched Full Tilt Boots. Then, Levinthal set out to do something different. J Skis was born in 2013 with a direct-to-consumer model, meaning you won’t find their skis in stores. Their limited-edition designs—like a pair featuring Bob Ross’ face—sell out fast and are never restocked.
Levinthal’s contributions to skiing go beyond pranks and creative designs. He even rescued 4FRNT Skis from bankruptcy, ensuring another iconic brand stayed alive. Despite his non-stop innovation, he always makes time for a good joke. Maybe that’s the secret to his success—after all, skiing is about having fun.
More April Fools’ Day Shenanigans
Jason wasn’t the only one bringing humor to the ski world this year. Lake Tahoe Problems, a social media account dedicated to mountain town absurdities, posted:
“Viewer discretion advised! Absolutely nasty crash on 80 this morning.”
For those familiar with Tahoe’s winter traffic, this was an easy bait. Of course, there wasn’t a single snowflake on the highway that day.
Meanwhile, Jerry of the Day, the beloved ski-fail account, hilariously declared: “We are officially done posting Jerrys.”
And in the greatest weather-related joke, Utah Daily Snow reposted a statement. It said,”If April ended today, it would be the driest April on record.” Let’s just say nature had other plans.
Mountain towns are crazy places, but the people in them? Even crazier. Thankfully, this was all just a joke. Tesla-powered skis are not real (yet), but Jason Levinthal sure knows how to sell them.
