A Reminder of the Sacrifices Parents Make
Parents are known to sacrifice for their children, and for Ken Mohammad, that sacrifice was watching his son, Nasir Mohammad, leave for college. The heart-melting moment was recorded by Nasir’s mother and has since gone viral. In the clip, Ken can be seen breaking down in tears while hugging his son, telling him that he will miss him and that he has been with him his whole life.
For Ken, the pandemic had robbed Nasir of some of his high school traditions, including prom and graduation, which made the moment even more emotional for him. “Seniors really got robbed this year,” Ken explained. “So you didn’t have a prom. You didn’t have a graduation for me to cry at.”
But what ultimately left the dad crying was what gets most parents as they turn their children “loose” in the world. “I’ve never really been away from my son before,” Ken says, reflecting on the difficulty of letting go.
Nasir’s parents advised him on making good decisions while at school and reminded him that they are only a phone call away. Nasir says his dad has always been his greatest motivator, and he knew that his father would be proud of him for pursuing higher education. “He really wanted me to go to college,” Nasir said. “He wanted me to get higher education. So I knew that he was going to be proud.”
Ken’s emotional reaction is a beautiful reminder of the depth of a parent’s love for their child. Parents make many sacrifices for their children, from the sleep they sacrifice when they are babies to the time, energy, and resources they give up to help them grow.
