From Milkman to Movie Legend
Sir Sean Connery’s life story is one of hard work, big dreams, and unforgettable roles. Born on August 21, 1930, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Sean Connery grew up in a humble home with his mom Effie, a cleaner, and his dad Joseph, a factory worker and truck driver.
As a kid, people called him “Tommy” and later “Big Tam,” but he chose the name Sean after his childhood friend Séamus.
“Scotland Forever” — one of the tattoos he got during his service in the Royal Navy — showed how much he loved his homeland.
Sean was always proud of where he came from. He once declared: “I am not an Englishman, I was never an Englishman, and I don’t ever want to be one. I am a Scotsman! I was a Scotsman and I will always be one.”

Sean Connery went on to play James Bond in seven films, including From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, and Diamonds Are Forever. About acting, he once said: “I’m an actor – it’s not brain surgery. If I do my job right, people won’t ask for their money back.”
He didn’t just shine as Bond. His Oscar-winning role in The Untouchables and his beloved role as Indiana Jones’ dad showed his wide talent. He once joked about his knighthood, saying: “The knighthood I received was a fantastic honour but it’s not something I’ve ever used and I don’t think I ever will.”
Sean also had a funny side when talking about love and relationships. He admitted: “Love may not make the world go round, but I must admit that it makes the ride worthwhile.” And about women, he laughed: “I like women. I don’t understand them, but I like them.”
He shared humor about meeting his wife, too: “I met my wife through playing golf. She is French and couldn’t speak English and I couldn’t speak French, so there was little chance of us getting involved in any boring conversations – that’s why we got married really quickly.”
Even though Hollywood adored him, Sean never forgot Scotland. He once said: “Everything I have done or attempted to do for Scotland has always been for her benefit, never my own and I defy anyone to prove otherwise.”
When it came to Scotland’s future, he proudly declared: “I’ve always been hopeful about Scotland’s prospects. And I now believe more than ever that Scotland is within touching distance of achieving independence and equality.”
Connery also had a deep thought about humor and life: “Laughter kills fear, and without fear there can be no faith. For without fear of the devil there is no need for God.”
By the time he retired in 2006, Sean Connery had become one of the most respected actors in the world. In 2000, he was knighted by the Queen, becoming Sir Sean Connery. He is remembered not just for his movies, but also for being proud of who he was and where he came from.
