Lexy Kadey: Cuz of y’all, Kevin can cover his mom’s rent- and get himself something nice
Lexy Kadey from Nashville, Tennessee, has gone viral on video-sharing platform TikTok for a very unusual reason; she doesn’t dance, sing, or pull pranks – she simply asks her followers to donate their spare change.
What she does with that spare change is making a huge difference for the people she gives it to.
Lexy, also known as ‘The Serial Tipper’, starts off every Monday by asking her to follow more than 820,000 people to send her 50 cents.
By Friday at noon, she adds it up and finds someone worthy of the cash.
When Lexy Kadey saw a young man named Kevin playing his violin on the street outside of Target to raise money for his mother’s rent, she knew that he needed to be the recipient of $1,000 from her Venmo challenge.
Venmo is a mobile phone application, owned by PayPal, where users can attach their bank debit card and send money to their friends without a fee. To Lexy’s surprise, her followers ended up donating more than $3,000 through very small donations. Lexy not only left her server a $1,007 tip, but she also tipped two other strangers $1,000 each.
On August 9, 2020, Lexy saw a sign that read: “Need to help my mum with rent. God bless”.
“Hey, how close do you think you are to your mum’s rent?” Lexy asked Kevin.
“My mum’s rent is like $600, and I have like $175,” the musician shyly replied.
“So, if I gave you $1000, that would cover it?” Lexy asked.
Kevin was a bit shocked and thought he misheard her, so he stopped playing and said, “Excuse me?”
After explaining the tip challenge, Lexy handed Kevin $1000, leaving him momentarily speechless.
“Can I please give you a hug?” he finally said, before the two embraced.
“This is not real.”
Lexy and Kevin both thanked her followers for their generosity.
“It makes me so emotional,” Lexy said related to the number of kindness people want to share with others. “It is the coolest thing, especially with the year that we have been in. It is just awesome to see.
