Billy Hamilton sported customized cleats to support Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
Billy Hamilton was wearing the signatures of patients at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center when the Reds faced the Pittsburgh Pirates.
When the Pirates were hosting the Reds, Billy Hamilton was sporting some unique cleats that supported Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which is September. The customized spikes contained signatures of patients from the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and messages including “Go Reds” and “Get ’em killer!” complete with hearts to complement the gold stripes on the side.
More than 15,000 children and young adults are diagnosed with cancer each year in the U.S., according to the Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Nearly 2,000 people under age 19 die from cancer each year.
It was a great gesture to begin the month of September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Other players, including Tommy Pham and Josh Harrison, are also wearing special cleats with signatures of patients in support of the cause. And some of the Pirates shaved their heads for Childhood Cancer Awareness a night in September, hosting 25 kids and their families at the game.
