Unity in Harmony: Music as the Bridge to National Healing
In a time where the United States is grappling with deep-seated polarization, the idea of unity may feel like an unattainable dream. However, the story of the Jerusalem Youth Chorus, a remarkable Israeli-Palestinian music and dialogue project, teaches us that even in the most divided circumstances, bridges can be built. As we reflect on the years of deliberately sown division and mistrust, it becomes evident that fostering connections through shared experiences, like music, is not only possible but essential for national healing.
Through the lens of the Jerusalem Youth Chorus, founded in 2012, the transformative power of music is vividly apparent. This initiative, situated in one of the most famously divided cities globally—Jerusalem—brings together Israeli and Palestinian youth in a harmonious collaboration. As the director of the chorus, I have witnessed how music, drawn from diverse traditions, provides a window into unfamiliar cultures, histories, and realities. Music, it seems, offers a less threatening medium for individuals from deeply divided communities to connect.
Ala, a Palestinian Muslim teenager who spoke only Arabic, and Eden, an Israeli Jew who spoke only Hebrew, stand as living testaments to the unifying force of music. Despite language barriers, their shared love for music enabled the blossoming of a deep friendship. Ala, who overcame police obstacles and tear gas on the way to rehearsals, now contributes as a trilingual staff member. Eden, facing sacrifices at her religious high school, made history as the first Ethiopian-Israeli to represent Israel in the Eurovision Song Competition—singing in Hebrew, English, Amharic, and Arabic.
The history of humanity attests to the role of music as a tool for building community and fostering shared identity. Singing together triggers the release of oxytocin, often referred to as “the trust hormone,” creating a sense of connection. Even listening to music can stimulate empathy, engaging mirror neurons that help us understand others’ emotional states. Music has the power to shift our focus from irreconcilable positions to shared human needs—to love, safety, dignity, and a sense of belonging.
In foreign affairs, cultural diplomacy has long been employed to build trust between nations. As the United States grapples with internal divisions, why not apply the tools of cultural diplomacy domestically? We need a national initiative that strategically incorporates music into efforts to bring the country together. Musicians, as performers or educators, possess the unique ability to reconnect us emotionally, rekindling the feeling of togetherness that seems to have slipped away.
Moreover, mobilizing musicians could aid in revitalizing the creative sector of the economy, echoing the Works Progress Administration’s role during the Great Depression. The arts, contributing over $800 billion annually to the U.S. economy before the pandemic, can play a significant role in job creation and economic recovery.
While music alone won’t solve all of America’s problems, it can serve as a powerful entry point for building deep, resilient relationships. The Jerusalem Youth Chorus’s success lies not just in the music but in the professionally facilitated dialogue that accompanies it. A similar approach, grounded in an understanding of group process and conflict transformation, will be crucial for any musical intervention aiming to repair America’s frayed national ties. Music and dialogue, when combined, can have a far deeper and more sustained impact than either one alone.
As we envision a path to national reconciliation, we must adopt a multi-pronged approach. Just like Jerusalem, America must rebuild its capacity to think critically, hold complexity, and transform conflict into creative solutions. Organizations like Braver Angels, Convergence, and One America have already shown that breaking out of echo chambers and listening to one another is possible. However, in a deeply polarized nation, we need something to remind us that unity is achievable. Music could be the perfect place to start—a universal language that transcends boundaries and brings us together in harmony.
