Transforming Adversity into Inclusive Play at Admiral Kidd Park
In the heart of Long Beach, California, a beacon of hope emerged as community leaders, and local partners, including Marathon Petroleum’s Los Angeles refinery, gathered at Admiral Kidd Park for a groundbreaking ceremony. This marked a pivotal moment, almost two years after a devastating fire wiped out the beloved playground in July 2021.
Mayor Rex Richardson emphasized the significance of collaboration, stating, “Today’s groundbreaking highlights the important role that partnerships play to overcome big challenges and deliver for our community.”
The ceremony in late March, 2023 was more than just a symbolic gesture; it was a tangible step towards reconstructing a vital community space on the city’s west side. The fire sparked a community-wide effort and fundraising campaign, aiming to revive this popular gathering spot for children and families.
“Partners of Parks is so grateful we could help bring the community together to meet the funding gap and restore this safe space for kids to play,” expressed Trinka Rowsell, Executive Director of Partners of Parks, underscoring the power of collective efforts.
A project with a nearly seven-figure price tag demanded the engagement of various stakeholders. Marathon Petroleum swiftly answered the call, pledging $250,000 to the reconstruction. CP Patsatzis, Vice President of Refining at Marathon Petroleum, highlighted the often underestimated impact of parks on a community. He remarked, “This partnership between the private sector, the city, and all the organizations involved to make this day possible is truly remarkable.”
Admiral Kidd Park, named after Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, a Long Beach resident who lost his life at Pearl Harbor, holds historical significance. The refurbished playground, while maintaining its nautical theme paying homage to Kidd’s naval background, will now incorporate inclusive equipment. This addition aims to cater to children with disabilities or special needs, ensuring that the park becomes a welcoming space for all.
The reconstruction project is not just about replacing what was lost in the fire; it’s an opportunity to enhance the park’s accessibility and inclusivity. Scheduled for completion in the summer of 2023, the new Admiral Kidd Park Playground promises to be a testament to the resilience and unity of the Long Beach community.
As the playground rises from the ashes, it carries the spirit of collaboration, demonstrating that when a community comes together, it can overcome challenges and rebuild something even better than before.
