🎃 The Mulford Café: One Family Cooked Up Halloween Magic!
Halloween is full of candy, costumes, and creativity—but for one Utah family, it’s also a chance to learn about hard work and responsibility! In Salt Lake City, Kate Mulford, a mother of four, came up with a fun way for her kids to earn their own costume money: by running a restaurant for a day.
“I did not want to buy four costumes,” Mulford said. “Especially because they love Spirit Halloween, and those are so expensive.”
Instead of buying the costumes, she gave her children three choices: they could make them, borrow some, or earn the money themselves. That’s when the idea for the Mulford Café was born!
“We open our house one day a year and our kids open a café and serve people lunch,” Mulford explained.
This isn’t just any small meal—it’s a full restaurant experience!
“We go all out,” she said. “We set up tables in our living room. We move our couches … we hang bistro lights, we put flowers on the tables, candles, the music—I mean the whole nine yards.”
The Mulford Café has now become a yearly tradition, and each year it grows bigger.
“This year we had close to a hundred people come,” Mulford said. “They were serving tables for two hours straight.”
But the café is about more than just serving food—it’s about learning life skills too.
“We kept track of everything that we put in the cart, how much it cost, and we taught them about net income and gross income,” she said. “Then the money they earned, we subtracted what we spent.”
By running their own café, the Mulford kids have learned that earning money takes effort—but it’s worth it.
“They have really understood how much work it takes to earn just enough to buy a Halloween costume,” she said. “They were exhausted … but they cherish that costume.”
The Mulford Café is such an inspiring idea! It demonstrates how a little creativity can transform a normal day into an unforgettable family experience. These kids are learning lessons about teamwork, money, and pride that will last far longer than any Halloween night.
