A Jaguar Surprise: A Mother’s Memorable Homecoming
In January 2018, a mother returned from service. Her return became a story of love, resilience, and community at McKinley Elementary School in Appleton, Wisconsin. Sergeant Jen Sabrowsky of the Wisconsin Army National Guard had just returned from a ten-month deployment in the Middle East. She decided to surprise her 12-year-old son, Jake. It was in an unforgettable way.
The school’s mascot costume—a friendly jaguar—became the perfect disguise. With the enthusiastic collaboration of McKinley’s principal, Andrea Vinje, Sgt. Sabrowsky walked into the lunchroom incognito, giving high-fives to students and spreading excitement. Her identity remained a secret until she sat across from her son, removed the mascot head, and revealed herself.
Jake’s reaction was instant and heartfelt. With a joyful cry of “Mom!” he bolted from his seat and threw himself into her arms, earning cheers and applause from classmates and staff. As a sixth-grader, he had endured nearly a year apart from his mother. It was a moment of pure, unrestrained joy.
A Deployment’s Challenges
Sgt. Sabrowsky spent her deployment with Company D of the 1-147th Aviation Battalion. She flew medevac missions and performed critical aviation support in the Middle East. Back home, her family faced its own challenges. Her husband, Marc, a veteran and the boys’ primary caregiver during her absence, juggled work, school, and parenting responsibilities. Jake and his younger brother, Jackson, also struggled with the separation.
Sabrowsky recognized the toll her absence had taken. She wanted her return to be more than just a reunion. It needed to celebrate their resilience and unity.
“It was a tough time for both of them,” she shared. “I wanted this to feel like something to be proud of, not just something to endure.”
Community Support and a Grateful Heart
The moment was made possible by the unwavering support of McKinley Elementary School and the broader Appleton community. From arranging the mascot surprise to providing encouragement throughout her deployment, the school became an anchor for the family.
Sabrowsky credits the success of her family’s journey to the collective efforts of her support system. Friends, colleagues, and community members pitched in, offering everything from care packages to flexible work arrangements for her husband.
“I did not feel like I personally did anything extraordinary while being deployed,” she humbly noted. “The true heroes are the ones who supported us every step of the way.”
A Life of Service
For Sgt. Sabrowsky, military service is more than a job—it’s a lifestyle embraced by her entire family. Her sons, proud to call themselves “Army brats,” have gained a deep understanding of sacrifice and service.
Reflecting on her experience, Sabrowsky emphasized the importance of those who serve behind the scenes. “Whether it’s family members stepping up at home or communities supporting deployed soldiers, their contributions are vital and unforgettable.”
Now home for the foreseeable future, Sabrowsky looks ahead to building on the strong bonds within her family. She cherishes the moments that make life extraordinary. She even needs a jaguar costume. It reminds her of the love that waits on the other side of the table.
