Olivia Omega and Malia Logan earn degrees and publish a memoir—on the same unforgettable day
In a heartwarming moment that seems straight out of a movie script, a mother and daughter in Jackson, Mississippi, shared more than just a family bond this Mother’s Day—they shared a graduation stage and a major literary milestone.
Just moments after Malia Logan received her diploma from Belhaven University, her mother, Olivia Omega, crossed the same stage to accept her own degree. The timing was unplanned, but the moment became unforgettable.
“It’s an incredible feeling. It’s nothing that we planned. Initially, there was an opportunity for me to go back to school and get my MBA, and then trying to decide where that should be. And in my searches found that Belhaven had a really great MBA in Entrepreneurship Program, which is exactly what I was looking for,” she said. “So, it was sort of a coincidence that, one, we were able to attend the same institution, but that our graduations would actually land at the same time. So, really great surprise.”
Their academic journey together wasn’t always easy, but it was deeply meaningful. Imagine a household where late nights of homework weren’t a generational divide—but a shared experience.
“It was purely just excitement and joy to get to experience doing homework at the same time, which I never thought we would both be in the room, both doing homework,” Malia Logan said. “But yeah, it’s just been a joy ride, and just I think it shows our relationship so well to be able to walk the stage at the same time, and we’re already so close, and now we get to share this moment together.”
But the day didn’t end with a cap toss and photos. The duo also released a memoir titled Through Her Eyes: Mother and Daughter Parallel Perspectives on Love, Loss, Blackness, Purpose, and Faith—a powerful and personal reflection told through their intertwined lenses.
“Knowing that there [are] so many types of mother-daughter relationships out there is… We really just wanted to explore different topics, different emotions, different things that connect a mom and a daughter. So, our chapters are different topics, like we we’re both super strong in our faith, love, loss, both of us being Black women,” Logan said. “We take all these topics and we each share our experiences through those different topics and how we’ve helped each other and learn from each other.”
This is more than a feel-good story—it’s a statement about resilience, generational connection, and the power of faith and education to transform lives. Olivia and Malia didn’t just walk across a stage; they stepped into purpose—together.
In a world that often moves too fast to appreciate the power of shared milestones, Olivia Omega and Malia Logan offer a pause worth celebrating. Their story reminds us that no dream is too late to chase, and no bond too ordinary to change the world. They are not just graduates—they are legacy builders, and their journey is a beacon for every mother and daughter daring to dream together.
