Ashley Adams and her parents, Robyn and Greg, share a once-in-a-lifetime commencement, proving that dreams have no deadline.
In a heartwarming and historic moment at Texas Lutheran University in 2023, Ashley Adams walked across the graduation stage not just as a proud daughter, but as a classmate—flanked by her two biggest inspirations: her parents.
“This is my fun fact when I meet people,” said Ashley Adams, an education major from Cibolo, ahead of the ceremony.
In a scene that would make any family beam with pride, Ashley, along with her mother Robyn and father Greg, made history as the first family trio to graduate together in the same class at TLU.
“Who else can say that they went to college with both of their parents and will be walking the stage with them?” she added. “My parents didn’t get to finish their education because they wanted to start a family and there were better opportunities at the time to obtain that goal.”
Years later, those dreams deferred were reignited when Robyn and Greg decided to transfer to TLU, and instead of hesitation, they were met with nothing but encouragement from their daughter.
“I can’t express how proud I am of my parents for not only going back to school, but making the most out of their time here,” Ashley said. “My mom has taken on a mother-like role and was always helping her classmates in various ways. My dad got to be a college athlete by joining the golf team.”
Each member of the Adams family took on their own journey at TLU: Ashley earned her degree in education, Robyn completed a master’s in accounting, and Greg—a retired Army veteran—fulfilled a lifelong dream by earning a business degree and becoming a college golfer.
“I think that they have had such a presence on campus, and I am so lucky and proud to call them my parents,” Ashley added. “Graduating with my family is by far going to be one of the most special moments of my life.”
For Robyn, the moment was doubly meaningful.
“I’m going to be watching my husband and daughter and it’s going to be surreal,” she said of the Spring Commencement Ceremony. “I’m so very proud of Ashley, but to get to watch from a behind-the-scenes perspective is really neat and something I would never give up.”
Greg, reflecting on the journey, admitted the occasion would likely be emotional.
“I want to say I won’t get emotional, but I probably will,” he said. “I’m so very proud of all of Ashley’s accomplishments and the woman she is becoming. I thank her for allowing us the opportunity to attend TLU and for allowing us to watch her develop into the person she is.”
This incredible milestone is a reminder that it’s never too late to chase your dreams—and sometimes, you get to cross the finish line with the ones you love most by your side.
