A Halloween Tradition That Brings Generations Together
Patti Schmidt, a New Jersey-based photographer, discovered she was pregnant at age 44. She never imagined the special traditions she would create for her family. Patti has three grown sons: Larry, Patrick, and Gavin. Avery, a surprise addition, was born in 2016. She has found a unique way to bridge the age gap and build lasting memories: themed Halloween photo shoots.
“By the time I turned 40, I had given up hope for another baby. However, there were other plans in store for us,” Patti shared.
Avery wouldn’t have same-age siblings to experience Halloween with. Realizing this, Patti joined her love of photography and creativity. She designed elaborate costume themes for her four children. Starting in 2017 with The Wizard of Oz, each year brought new and imaginative ideas.
“Avery’s mid-air in that photo.” She explained that it was because she had a little photo series called #averyintheair. It was her very first themed shoot.
Following years saw the family embody characters from Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and The Princess Bride. “My husband and I were binge-watching Game of Thrones. I thought the boys as dragons would be so funny,” Patti said with a laugh.
Her creativity struck a chord online. Videos and photos of the annual costumes garnered millions of views on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. “The boys are good sports,” Patti noted. “They adore Avery.”
Larry, Patrick, and Gavin always make time for their sister. They do this despite their busy lives and physical distance — the two eldest sons live in different states. “They’ve never balked… they’ve always been willing,” Patti shared. “But there may or may not be a good-natured groan or two when I pull out the next theme.”
Now 5, Avery shares a unique bond with her older brothers, thanks to these traditions. “They are close despite not only age differences but physical distance,” said Patti.
As Halloween 2021 approached, the family kept their costume plans a secret, building excitement for their loyal online followers. “It’s fun,” Patrick said, adding, “Avery has a blast.”
This heartwarming tradition shows the power of creativity and love. It brings families together, regardless of age gaps or life stages.
