Denny Priyatna likes to explore the interaction between humans and inanimate objects
Denny R. Priyatna is a gifted Indonesian product designer with a deep interest in exploring the connection between humans and inanimate objects. His love for design and creativity pushes him to experiment with various materials and techniques to create both commercially successful and conceptually innovative products.
Recently, Denny has been working with Flexible Sawdust, a sustainable material made from sawdust, which is a waste product generated in the wood industry. To create this material, Denny mixed sawdust with an adhesive to form a flexible substance that can be molded into 3D objects. The process is straightforward and requires only basic hand tools, making it ideal for small projects like vases and stationery holders.
Additionally, Denny discovered that using a minimal amount of glue instead of resin creates a pliable, paper-like material. This material can be stacked to form objects of different thicknesses or combined with leather scraps to make accessories such as pen holders and containers. This innovative approach to using waste materials is not only environmentally conscious but also results in unique and functional products.
Denny’s education and professional experience have provided him with the skills necessary to thrive in the competitive world of product design. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Product Design from the Bandung Institute of Technology and later completed a Master’s degree at the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London. Throughout his career, he has gained invaluable experience working for leading design studios such as Lumina Group, Eterno Workshop, Paul Cocksedge Studio, and Accupunto.
Denny’s designs have earned recognition and accolades on an international level. He has won numerous awards, been featured in leading design magazines such as Wallpaper* UK and Design Anthology, and had his work exhibited around the world. In 2014, Denny was selected as one of six Rising Asian Talents to represent Indonesia at the Maison & Objet Asia event, a testament to his exceptional talent and creativity.
At the core of Denny’s work is a desire to celebrate the beauty of everyday life, often inspired by the overlooked and undervalued aspects of our environment. One of his most notable designs, the Apolite lighting product, was created in response to a young designer competition organized by a local design magazine. The flowing lines and flexibility of the rattan-based design won him first prize and garnered recognition both domestically and internationally.
Ultimately, Denny’s aim is to create perfection from imperfection, incorporating both rough and smooth elements in his designs to produce products that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. His passion for design and commitment to his craft make him a rising star in the world of product design.
