Alternative Breaks Program Connects Students with Service and Learning
In 2025, a group of dedicated University of Kansas students chose service over sunbathing. They spent their spring break volunteering through KU Alternative Breaks. This program has provided immersive service experiences since 1995.
Eleven students traveled to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. They assisted at a sanctuary that rescues and cares for big cats. Their work ranged from cleaning enclosures and handling maintenance tasks to crafting KU-themed enrichment toys for the animals.
“The service I completed at Turpentine Creek was incredibly organized, and it was easy to see the impact of our work. The type of work we completed allowed us to learn about the animals, and the staff were there to answer any questions we had,” said Bella Wade, a spring break participant. “My two favorite activities were rock pickup, as many of the rocks we cleaned up had fossils hidden inside, and making the KU-themed enrichment toys, which we were able to watch get distributed to the animals.”
Beyond volunteering, students explored Eureka Springs. They ventured into the Cosmic Cavern. They also enjoyed a meal at the famous Lambert’s Cafe on their way back to Lawrence.
KU Alternative Breaks is a student-led program. It is funded by Student Senate. The program is supported by university initiatives like Hawk Link and the Center for Service Learning. Participants can even earn course credit through UNIV 492, a special projects course dedicated to service learning.
The program is now accepting applications for next year’s leadership roles. These include paid and volunteer positions in public relations, finance, and trip planning. The deadline for paid positions is March 30, while volunteer applications are due by April 11.
For students aiming to make an impact, KU Alternative Breaks provides an unforgettable opportunity. They gain hands-on experience while they serve, learn, and grow.
