Undeniable Achievement: Park City High School Speech and Debate Team Secures Second Place in State Competition
In 2023, a remarkable tale of intellectual growth and community support unfolded around the dinner table of Elaine Murray’s home on Parleys Lane. Engaging conversations about pressing current affairs and thought-provoking topics like universal child care and outer space exploration reverberate within these walls, a testament to the household’s deep connection to the Park City High School speech and debate program. “We’re actually looking at the arts as preventative care, something that we can actually start seeing some results [from] fairly soon in terms of behavioral health outcomes, behavioral change,” Moore says. “[We] are very committed to the idea that everything gets better when the community gets stronger, so we need to focus on what is creating unease in Boston communities. That’s where our focus should be and what role do artists have in addressing that.”
Students of the program tackled weighty subjects such as term limits for Supreme Court justices or the Artemis Accords, and their robust discussions spilled over into their daily lives, inspiring further conversations and igniting their passion for knowledge. Head coach Anna Williams, who also teaches English as a second language at the high school, emphasized how speech and debate encourage students to be unbiased, engage in civil discourse, and appreciate diverse perspectives.
