Omega Speech and Debate (OSD), an academy spearheaded by the visionary leadership of Livingston High School senior Matthew Zhang, has not only emerged as an educational powerhouse but has also extended its reach into the realm of social responsibility and community betterment. As the summer sun cast its warm glow, OSD embarked on a journey that went beyond traditional boundaries, touching lives, and creating a ripple effect of positive change.

While OSD had initially navigated its first two years through the virtual landscape due to the pandemic, this summer marked a significant turning point. With the pandemic’s impact waning, Matthew Zhang seized the opportunity to transition OSD’s programs from the digital realm to the physical world, fostering a direct and impactful connection between instructors and students. Throughout the summer, OSD embarked on an in-person summer camp at Livingston’s Aquinas Academy, a move that not only reflected a return to normalcy but also a commitment to advancing education and social progress.

Over three transformative weeks in August of 2022, the academy’s instructors, led by Matthew Zhang and his dedicated team, immersed over 60 students in a comprehensive curriculum that extended beyond the traditional boundaries of learning. With six hours of daily instruction, students delved into the art of public speaking and debate, honing skills that transcended academia. However, the significance of this endeavor reached far beyond skill development; it sought to address a profound issue that had emerged during the pandemic – the erosion of academic progress due to remote learning.

A study published in “The Atlantic” underscored the gravity of the situation, revealing that students navigating remote learning during the pandemic had experienced significant setbacks in their academic development. Recognizing this challenge, Zhang and his team designed a debate curriculum that went beyond teaching rhetoric; it aimed to bridge the learning gaps in critical thinking, research, reading, and writing. From cultivating effective communication and research skills to nurturing persuasive writing and critical analysis, the OSD summer camp ventured into uncharted territory – the realm of “post-pandemic learning recovery.”

Zhang’s foresight and dedication to educational excellence found fruition in the student’s final project – an argumentative research paper exploring whether the United States government should increase investment in High-Speed Rail. The project not only showcased the students’ newfound skills but also highlighted the transformative power of education in empowering young minds.

Beyond the realm of traditional education, OSD’s summer camp unveiled another dimension – the creation of the Competitive Speech Class, guided by OSD Speech Director Hannah Kim.
