In a remarkable achievement for Hood River Valley High School, three talented students have secured invitations to the prestigious National Speech and Debate tournament scheduled to take place from June 11 to 19, 2023, in Phoenix, Arizona. The trio, consisting of sophomore Anson Pulk, junior India Hargrave, and sophomore Ava Moore, will be showcasing their exceptional skills in the realms of debate and poetry on the national stage.

Anson Pulk and India Hargrave, both accomplished debaters, are set to represent their school in the debating category. Additionally, Ava Moore, a sophomore with a flair for poetry, will be competing in the poetry segment of the tournament. Parent Chuck Moore expressed his admiration for the commitment displayed by these young adults. He mentioned that despite the tournament coinciding with their school finals, the students are determined to excel in both arenas. “These three young adults are very dedicated,” said Chuck Moore. “This is the same week as their school finals, and so they will be doing their finals early.”

In their pursuit of representing Hood River Valley High School at the national level, the students have initiated a fundraising campaign. To ensure they have the financial means to cover their trip expenses, they have set up an e-pledge account, providing an accessible platform for their friends, family, and community to contribute to their journey. Additionally, the students have planned a creative and environmentally conscious effort by collecting cans and bottles in the school parking lot as part of their fundraising initiative.
