Triumphant Hood River students raise funds for speech and debate National tournament
In a remarkable achievement for Hood River Valley High School, three talented students have secured invitations to the prestigious National Speech and Debate tournament scheduled to take place from June 11 to 19, 2023, in Phoenix, Arizona. The trio, consisting of sophomore Anson Pulk, junior India Hargrave, and sophomore Ava Moore, will be showcasing their exceptional skills in the realms of debate and poetry on the national stage.
Anson Pulk and India Hargrave, both accomplished debaters, are set to represent their school in the debating category. Additionally, Ava Moore, a sophomore with a flair for poetry, will be competing in the poetry segment of the tournament. This commendable achievement not only reflects the students’ dedication and talent but also speaks volumes about the rigorous training and guidance they have received from their school’s speech and debate program.
However, their journey to the national tournament isn’t without its challenges. Unlike some events covered by school funds, the expenses related to transportation, accommodation, meals, and entrance fees for the national tournament are not included. Recognizing the significance of this opportunity, the students, along with their parents and supporters, have taken proactive measures to ensure they can participate in the event.
Parent Chuck Moore expressed his admiration for the commitment displayed by these young adults. He mentioned that despite the tournament coinciding with their school finals, the students are determined to excel in both arenas. “These three young adults are very dedicated,” said Chuck Moore. “This is the same week as their school finals, and so they will be doing their finals early.”
In their pursuit of representing Hood River Valley High School at the national level, the students have initiated a fundraising campaign. To ensure they have the financial means to cover their trip expenses, they have set up an e-pledge account, providing an accessible platform for their friends, family, and community to contribute to their journey. Additionally, the students have planned a creative and environmentally conscious effort by collecting cans and bottles in the school parking lot as part of their fundraising initiative.
The success and recognition achieved by Anson Pulk, India Hargrave, and Ava Moore are a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the unwavering support of their school’s speech and debate program. Beyond the classroom, these students are demonstrating their commitment to personal growth, academic excellence, and the pursuit of their passions. Their journey to the National Speech and Debate tournament not only enriches their own experiences but also serves as an inspiration to their peers and the entire school community.
As June approaches, anticipation and excitement are palpable among the students and their supporters. The chance to compete on a national stage and engage with peers from across the country is an opportunity that will undoubtedly contribute to their personal and academic development. Their journey also underscores the significance of extracurricular activities in fostering well-rounded individuals who excel not only in their chosen disciplines but also in their dedication to making a positive impact.
The Hood River Valley High School community rallies behind Anson Pulk, India Hargrave, and Ava Moore as they embark on this transformative journey to the National Speech and Debate tournament. Their commitment, hard work, and resilience exemplify the values of dedication and excellence that the school strives to instill in its students. As they prepare to represent their school and showcase their talents, their story becomes an inspiring narrative of determination, passion, and the pursuit of excellence in education and beyond.
