Delashay Lawrence and Aaliyah Nelson: Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Dreams in North Tulsa
Growing up in North Tulsa, Oklahoma, in a single-father household with six siblings, I faced numerous challenges that seemed insurmountable. In a community burdened by poverty and generational obstacles, the prospect of a different future appeared distant. Nevertheless, I was resolute in my determination to break the cycle and make a lasting impact on my family and community. This is the story of my journey, showcasing the transformative power of education and mentorship.
From an early age, I yearned to forge a different path for myself, to transcend the circumstances that engulfed me. The first glimpse of success arrived during my sophomore year in high school when I received acceptance into Harvard University’s Summer School Program. It was a life-altering opportunity that revealed a world of possibilities previously unimaginable. However, despite being granted a partial scholarship, I still lacked the necessary funds to attend. Yet, my community rallied behind me, initiating a GoFundMe campaign that made my dream a reality.
This experience fueled an insatiable hunger for more. I dedicated myself to excelling academically in high school, recognizing that education held the key to a brighter future. Consequently, I earned a full-ride academic scholarship to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, where I am currently pursuing a major in international business. College represents a significant milestone for me, as I am the first in my family to pursue higher education. Both my parents ever graduated high school, and Oklahoma, my home state, struggles with high rates of teen pregnancy and incarcerated women. However, these statistics did not define me; instead, they served as catalysts for fortifying my determination to overcome adversity.
My unwavering commitment is to be a beacon of hope for my family and community. I firmly believe that one’s origins do not dictate their destination. Every individual faces challenges in life, and it is our resilience that truly defines us. I am devoted to showcasing the possibilities and effecting change in the lives of those around me. One of my foremost priorities is mentoring young girls from my community, guiding them through the college application process, assisting with scholarships, and addressing their mental health needs. Having experienced the profound impact of mentorship firsthand, I aspire to become that guiding light for others.
Despite encountering my own struggles, giving back to the community remains an intrinsic part of my journey. Volunteering at local community centers has always been a fundamental aspect of my mission. Ultimately, my goal is to become an entrepreneur and establish a community outreach center catering to at-risk youth. This sanctuary will provide them with the resources and support necessary for their flourishing.
Presently, I am actively engaged with the Soaring Eagles Youth of Family Services, a nonprofit organization established by my mentor a decade ago. Through this organization, I recently had the opportunity to share my story at a teen girl summit. Serving as a source of guidance and inspiration, I reminded the attendees that they possess the power to surmount any obstacle. I reassured them that I, too, sat in their seats a few years ago, confronting comparable challenges. Yet, through perseverance and unwavering focus, success lies within their grasp.
Two other students from North Tulsa, Delashay Lawrence, and Aaliyah Nelson, are preparing to embark on their transformative journeys at prestigious universities this summer. Similarly, they are the first in their families to tread upon college campuses, transcending the limitations imposed by their backgrounds. Delashay excelled academically in Harvard’s Summer Program, and Aaliyah received acceptance to Harvard as well. Their stories epitomize the positive impact of organizations like the Soaring Eagles Program, which empowers young girls to break free from the cycle of incarceration and teen pregnancy.
However, these incredible opportunities come at a cost. To support Delashay and Aaliyah’s attendance at these programs, the community must unite and raise nearly $45,000. Investing in their education signifies our belief in their potential and eradicates any barriers that might impede their journeys.
I maintain unwavering faith that my path, alongside Delashay’s and Aaliyah’s, is guided by a higher purpose. We are steadfast in our commitment to effecting lasting change, not just for ourselves but for the generations that will follow. Our stories serve as reminders that irrespective of our origins, with determination, education, and mentorship, we can shatter barriers and achieve greatness.
Together, let us rally behind these brilliant young minds and invest in their dreams. In doing so, we not only transform their lives but also inspire countless others in North Tulsa to dream bigger and reach higher. The time for change is now, and the future of our community hinges upon our collective efforts to empower and uplift every individual who dares to defy the odds.
