Allyson Horst, and Alfa Vergara-Nunez from Collier high school were selected as Bank of America Student Leaders
Two high school students from Collier County, Florida, Allyson Horst, and Alfa Vergara-Nunez, were selected as Bank of America Student Leaders for 2022. The Student Leaders program is a paid internship that provides students with hands-on learning experiences in their communities. The program recognizes 300 community-focused juniors and seniors from across the U.S. every year. Allyson and Alfa were two of the lucky few to be selected for this prestigious program.
Allyson Horst, a student at Barron Collier High School, founded the Health and Humanity Club. This club focuses on addressing poverty and homelessness through volunteering and partnering with local organizations. Allyson’s passion for helping her community started at a young age when she volunteered with her family at St. Matthew’s House, a local organization that helps those in need. Allyson’s experience at St. Matthew’s House inspired her to create the Health and Humanity Club, where she could make a bigger impact by involving more people. The club’s activities include organizing food drives, volunteering at local homeless shelters, and partnering with organizations to provide health care services to those in need. Allyson’s dedication to helping those in need is an inspiration to others, and her work with the Health and Humanity Club has made a significant impact on her community.
Alfa Vergara-Nunez, a student at Naples High School, is dedicated to giving back to her Hispanic community. As a minority with parents who were not fluent in English, Alfa understands the struggles faced by immigrant families. She attended New Horizons from kindergarten to eighth grade, a school that helps students who are not fluent in English learn the language and succeed academically. Now, Alfa volunteers at New Horizons, helping other students as she succeeds. Alfa’s passion for helping her community comes from her own experiences, and her work at New Horizons is an inspiration to others.
