An Aquarium Trip Turns Extraordinary When Dolphins Recognize a Golden Retriever’s Special Purpose
When Ashton McGrady took her golden retriever Forest to the aquarium, she expected a fun day. What she didn’t expect was for the dolphins to fall in love with her dog!
“You won’t believe how these dolphins reacted to my service dog,” she shared on TikTok, where her video quickly went viral with over 2.5 million views. “I think the dolphins knew he was special.”
Forest isn’t just any golden retriever—he’s a trained service dog. “Forest is my golden retriever service dog,” McGrady said. “He’s task-trained to assist with my disabilities, including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), syringomyelia, and autism spectrum disorder.”
Forest does a lot to help Ashton live a full life. He can “retrieve medication, close doors or cabinets, remove clothing, help during meltdowns, and even sense cardiac events.” That’s more than most superheroes!
“This was the first time he’d ever interacted with marine animals and definitely the first time meeting dolphins,” McGrady said. “It felt like an unusually strong connection—almost like they sensed Forest’s purpose.”
Watching the dolphins and Forest connect moved Ashton deeply. “I was completely in awe,” she said. “Forest was so calm and curious, and the dolphins were clearly engaged … It was a reminder that empathy and connection can transcend species.”
A former aquarium worker even chimed in on the moment: “I used to work at an aquarium! Dolphins LOVESSSS dogs. They don’t understand them. Then find them SOOOO interesting… They can feel them roll around with echolocation. It’s beautiful.”
Ashton hopes that this special video helps more people understand what service dogs really are. “They aren’t pets,” she said. “They are highly trained medical tools and life partners for disabled people.”
“Service dogs do so much more than people realize,” McGrady added. “[He is] essential to my safety and independence. These dogs perform complex tasks … their presence can truly be lifesaving.”
This story really shows how amazing animals are—both dolphins and dogs! Forest isn’t just cute; he’s smart, kind, and trained to help in ways many people don’t even realize. The dolphins may not have understood exactly what Forest was doing, but it sure seemed like they felt his kindness and purpose. It reminds me that even without speaking the same language, kindness and empathy can connect all living things—no matter the species.
