A Decade-Long Motorcycle Adventure Fueled by Love, Loss, and Loyalty
Janell and Stu Clarke first discussed their shared love of travel during their 2004 date. They never imagined it would lead to a global odyssey spanning nearly a decade. This journey was accompanied by a cast of beloved dogs. A simple dream began. It transformed into a remarkable story of resilience and love. A Journey Takes Shape
The couple’s passion for exploration truly ignited in 2009 when Janell earned her motorcycle license. Together with their dog Skyla, they began crisscrossing Australia. Stu, a former Royal Australian Navy engineer, was ready for a grander adventure when his naval obligations ended in 2014. Instead of quick getaways, the Clarkes aimed high: a worldwide motorcycle expedition.
Cost considerations dictated their plan. “Leaving Australia is expensive,” Stu explained. They wanted to make the most of their travels. They decided to go all in. There were no return tickets and no fixed end date. Just open roads and the thrill of discovery.
A Canine Companion’s Courage
Skyla, the couple’s cherished dog, was central to their plans. They meticulously prepared import permits for every destination to guarantee her journey would be seamless. Nonetheless, Skyla was diagnosed with cancer just before the trip. Against the odds, she recovered after intensive treatment. In February 2014, the trio departed for Dallas, Texas. It was the first stop of their adventure.
Riding specially chosen motorbikes, they explored North America before heading south. Skyla traveled in a custom motorcycle dog carrier, enjoying the journey as much as her human companions. Sadly, as they entered Central America, Skyla’s cancer returned. Despite their best efforts, she passed away in Venezuela.
Grieving deeply, Janell and Stu considered ending their travels. A reflective hike through Venezuela’s table-top mountains brought clarity. They decided to honor Skyla by continuing the journey more slowly. They focused on each other and on the experiences that lay ahead.
A Growing Family
Their journey took an unexpected turn when they adopted Weeti, a disabled dog whose blood had once helped Skyla. Then, in Colombia, a second rescue, Shadow, joined the fold after surviving a near-fatal accident. Later in Turkey, they encountered Azra, a puppy with a contagious illness, and adopted her as well.
Each addition came with challenges. They ranged from securing veterinary care to obtaining travel permits. Janell and Stu embraced the responsibility. Traveling with three dogs meant adapting their plans, avoiding certain activities, and ensuring accommodations were pet-friendly.
Challenges and Triumphs
The couple traversed continents and cultures. They rode through Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. They even navigated the complexities of border crossings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite delays, the Clarkes remained committed to their journey and their growing pack.
By late 2022, they prepared to return to Australia. Logistical hurdles extended their timeline. They opted for a stopover in New Zealand. Their dogs underwent a brief quarantine there. Finally, in July 2023, Janell and Stu returned to the Gold Coast. They completed the journey after years of determination. They brought Weeti, Shadow, and Azra.
