Donald Williams Jr., a junior at Mercer University from Columbus, was elected to participate in the 2019 Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program in Washington, D.C. This program was designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers.
As a Rangel Scholar, Williams lived at Howard University, attended classes, and participated in a variety of programs with foreign affairs professionals at Howard and diverse locations around the nation’s capital. Williams double majored in international business and economics with a minor in marketing, and his interests included international trade and development, real estate, and sales. He aspired to become a U.S. Foreign Service Officer.
This achievement highlighted Williams’ repeated success in pursuing his passion for global learning and illustrated his extraordinary ability to take full advantage of the opportunities Mercer makes available to its students. He had been selected as a Benjamin A. Gilman Scholar and a Fund for Education Abroad Scholar, and he was the president of the Alpha Tau Chapter of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi and vice-president of the Residence Hall Association.
The Rangel Summer Enrichment Program provided an excellent opportunity for Williams to expand his international perspective and knowledge as he learned from foreign affairs professionals and participated in a variety of programs. His selection as a Rangel Scholar was a testament to his hard work, dedication, and passion for global affairs.
Dr. Ashley Lynn Buchanan, the study abroad coordinator, praised Williams’ success in pursuing his passion for global learning and development and expressed her pleasure in watching him mature and develop his goals through the Office of International Programs. She described Williams as an expert in international education and global affairs and noted that the office looked forward to having him back the next year to serve as an advocate for other students who shared his interests.
Williams’ participation in the Rangel Summer Enrichment Program not only offered him the opportunity to expand his knowledge and gain valuable experience but also highlighted the importance of pursuing one’s passions and taking advantage of the opportunities presented. As Williams continued his journey toward becoming a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, he served as an inspiration to other students who sought to pursue a career in international affairs.
