Bottl3man: Bottlenecks as the Brushstrokes of a Creative Muralist
In the vibrant realm of art, innovation has the power to transcend traditional boundaries. For French muralist Nicolas Thollot Arsac, known as Bottl3man, this innovation took an unexpected form: bottle necks.
It all started when a fellow artist suggested to Arsac that he experiment with painting using bottle caps. Intrigued, Arsac gave it a try, but he swiftly discovered that bottle necks held an even more captivating potential. Since that pivotal moment, his bottleneck murals have gained a global following, particularly on Instagram.
One of his followers happened to be Brian Brewer, co-owner and brewmaster alongside Steve Roberts at Torrance’s HopSaints Brewing Company in California. Recognizing the unique artistry of Bottl3man, Brewer extended an invitation for Arsac to leave his mark on the wall of the Sports Harbor Bar and Grill, located just across the parking lot from HopSaint.
Since his arrival a week ago, Arsac has meticulously crafted six-foot tall portraits of iconic figures such as Amy Winehouse, Bob Marley, Lady Gaga, and Ray Charles. Employing a painstaking pointillistic technique, he substitutes brushes with bottlenecks, yielding a distinctive texture and depth to his art.
Before Arsac bids farewell to Torrance and heads home, he plans to add portraits of legendary artists Aretha Franklin and Stevie Ray Vaughan, enriching the mural’s narrative even further.
Despite the intricate technique, Arsac’s portraits exude a sense of positivity and joy. He believes that art should harmonize with its surroundings, and HopSaints, being a hub of happiness, naturally complements these vibrant depictions. “And it’s a brewery, so I used beer bottlenecks,” Arsac chuckles, acknowledging the serendipity of his chosen medium.
The mural itself, aptly named “Cheers!”, boldly adorns the wall. The name, written in oversized, comic-book-style letters, is punctuated with an exclamation mark that echoes the effervescence of HopSaints.
Arsac’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in his upbringing in Lyon, within a family of architects. His educational pursuits led him to study both architecture and mural painting in the vibrant artistic landscape of Paris.
Bottlenecks, according to Arsac, are not merely tools; they’re conduits for his creative vision. “Art is composition. I work everything out in my head before I start to paint,” he reveals, underlining the meticulous planning that underlies every stroke.
Arsac’s portfolio is a testament to his versatility, ranging from celebrity portraits on canvas to majestic whales adorning surfboards. Yet, regardless of the medium, his distinctive touch is unmistakable.
