Father and Son’s Unforgettable Moment: A Lesson on Hope and Faith in Little League
In the small town of Port Neches, Texas, there is a little league team that will never forget a special moment that occurred during their district championship game. The Port Neches 12U All-Stars were trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the 6th inning, with one runner on base, and Jake Smith due up to bat. Jake’s father, Adam Smith, and the other dads were nervously watching the game from the outfield fence. Adam had his rally cap on and was doing all kinds of crazy things to try and help his son and the team.
As fate would have it, Jake connected with the first pitch he saw, sending the ball flying over the fence for a walk-off home run. The ball ended up in his father’s hand, who couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed. The video of the catch has since gone viral on multiple social media platforms, but for Adam and Jake, it is a moment they will never forget.
Adam Smith called his son’s two-run home run the best moment of his life, even though he knew his wife might disagree since his kids were born. He clarified his statement later, so he wouldn’t end up in the doghouse when he got home. The play should serve as a lesson to all dads out there – when your son is up to bat, set up as a target in the outfield and let fate do the rest.
The District 32 Championship was on the line, and the Port Neches 12-year-old All-Stars needed a hero. They found one in Jake Smith, who stepped into the box with his dad looking on from the outfield. Adam knew he had to give his son a target to aim for, so he threw his hands up and shouted encouragement. Jake was nervous but managed to take three deep breaths before getting into the box. The first pitch he saw looked like it was going to die before it hit the fence, but Jake managed to hit a home run that ended up in his father’s hand.
Bryceten Felps, who was on base at the time, couldn’t believe what he saw. He thought it was just going to be a line drive hitting the fence, but instead, he witnessed a home run that sent his team jumping for joy. Teammate Parker Ross, who hit a home run to get Port Neches within striking distance, had faith in Jake and knew that they were going to be excited.
Last year, Adam Smith was featured on 12News for a much different reason. He was busy helping clean up graffiti in a Silsbee park. When asked if he thought that good deed was being rewarded, he said he hadn’t even thought about it. He was just doing what needed to be done. However, he did feel that the home run catch was a payback for his good deed. He thanked Jesus for the incredible moment.
The Port Neches 12U All-Stars went on to face Beaumont West End in the opening round of the Section 2 Tournament in the next game. While they didn’t win the tournament, the memory of Jake’s walk-off home run will live on for a long time.
This story is not just about a little league game or a father-and-son connection. It is about the power of hope and faith. Adam Smith hoped that his son would hit a home run, and he had faith that it would happen. Jake Smith hoped that he would make contact with the ball and get a hit, and he had faith in his ability to do so. The team hoped that they would win the championship, and they had faith in each other. And while they didn’t win the tournament, they won something much more significant – a moment that they will never forget, a moment that will remind them of the special family bond.
