Rams celebrate Super Bowl win
The Los Angeles Rams are Super Bowl LVI Champions on their home turf after defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20. The championship marks the Rams’ second Super Bowl win in franchise history since winning in 1999.
Rams head coach Sean McVay discusses what made his team so special, saying it was the most selfless group he’s ever been a part of, and their mental toughness, their resilience, and their belief in each other are what allowed them to claim the title.
McVay said it’s special to join his family’s Super Bowl legacy. Sean’s grandfather, John McVay, won five Super Bowl rings as a front office executive in personnel with the San Francisco 49ers.
McVay said he looked forward to presenting his 91-year-old grandfather with a Super Bowl ring. That would also follow a family legacy: John gave his three sons — including Sean’s father, Tim McVay — Super Bowl rings.
“He means so much to me,” McVay said of his grandfather. “I wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn’t for the legacy he set for our family. You talk about a class man, who treated people the right way and earned everything that he got. I’m just so grateful for him.”
McVay reserved special praise for wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who was named the Super Bowl’s MVP after a performance that included the winning touchdown.
Working in tandem with quarterback Stafford, Kupp put the Rams on his shoulders in the final game-winning drive, making catch after catch despite being relentlessly double-teamed.
“Cooper epitomizes what’s right about this team,” McVay said. “The selflessness, the humility, the clutch production when we had to have it.
“I’m better as a coach and as a person for being around Cooper Kupp. He’s made such an impact on me.”
The easing of Covid-19 restrictions meanwhile means that the Rams will be the first Los Angeles franchise to enjoy a traditional victory parade since the pandemic.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Lakers both won championships in 2020 but were unable to celebrate with a parade due to Covid-19. The Rams parade will be held on February 16th.
