Dancer Lil Buck puts on his Apple AirPods in the ad entitled “Stroll” and steps into a world of his own. He fluidly dances through the streets along the sidewalks of a black and white-hued city, matching his Memphis Jookin moves to the song “Down” by Marian Hill.

While the world goes on around him, he loses all sense of gravity, dancing on walls and windows, over obstacles, and on the underside of a lit marquee sign. It’s not until he takes out his AirPods that the sounds of the city streets bring him back to real life.

Within, Lil Buck showcases some of his signature moves, not only on the streets (of Mexico City, where the videos were shot) but also on the sides of buildings and cars and upside down beneath theater lights. The latter bits are, of course, done with the aid of special effects.

Lil Buck’s charisma and the characteristics of his street dancing have been employed to great effect—clearly striking the notion that AirPods let users be active and even defiant. It’s a strong addition to Apple’s long list of solid advertising and it’s worth sharing for both the talent they employ and the clear messaging it conveys about the impressive little earphones.

“We were pretty cautiously optimistic when we heard Apple chose ‘Down,’” notes a pianist Jeremy Lloyd of Marian Hill. “We have had songs in big commercials before and they’ve done decent things for us. For Apple, there were people around us who were like, ‘This is going to be huge!’ But we’ve been around the block and just wanted to see how it played out.”

“I think the reach this commercial has had has exceeded every expectation,” says a vocalist Samantha Gongol of Marian Hill. “That’s a credit to Apple, a credit to Lil Buck for dancing, and a little bit of credit to our song being dope.”
