The Seat Ibiza commercial. Start moving
The Spanish brand Seat invites you to “start moving” in the ad promoting the company’s sedan car ‘Ibiza.’
Set to the rhythms of “Mash Que Nada” by Sérgio Mendes feat. The Black Eyed Peas, the spot showcases Ibiza, which combines the Seat technology with head-turning looks, and some of its features, while delivering empowering messages.
The 60-second spot, presenting the Ibiza, focuses more on the moving part and features a wide variety of people, both men, and women, of all ages and backgrounds, dancing.
The ad, set to the rhythms of “Mas Que Nada,” begins with a young woman in a field, moving her arms into the air, and continues with various scenarios alternated with captures of the Ibiza speeding down a road and drifting.
A woman is dancing in the subway, a guy working in a parrot shop, who set free some parrots, is dancing among the birdcages, a woman is dancing in a chandelier store, another one in an empty swimming pool, another one in the middle of the street, three students are dancing in sync on the basketball court, two employees in a fast-food restaurant are hugging each and are improvising some quite original dance moves on the spot, a guy is dancing in a grocery store.
“Wanna keep going? Recharge”, “Want to shine? Shine!”, “Have a fear? Face it”, “Wanna meet up? Invite”, “Feeling sad? Dance”, “Have a dream? Chase it” – is the brand’s advice, while highlighting how Ibiza’s features can help you do all these things.
Sérgio Mendes is a pianist and arranger. Mas Que Nada was a song he used to play with my quartets in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and the first song I recorded in the States. The song was originally composed by Brazilian musician Jorge Ben Jor. Sergio loved the melody and he arranged for his version. He added the two female singers with himself, the drums, bass, and guitar. Then they overdubbed the vocals.
Once it was played on the radio, it became a huge hit in the US, and the rest of the world followed. It was the first song in Portuguese to be a hit, and it opened a lot of doors for him. Now, 40 years later, Mas Que Nada became a worldwide success all over again with the Black Eyed Peas’ version. will.i.am’s the idea of adding a rap was great. Now young people call me the Boss of Bossa Nova.
will.i.am is a rapper and producer. I’ve been a fan of Sérgio since I was 16. In 2003, the Black Eyed Peas were brainstorming on whom they could collaborate with. Almost jokingly, will.i.am said Sérgio Mendes. A person at the record company said, “I know Sérgio and I’m going to connect you.” I turned up at Sérgio’s house with every record he had ever made and said: “I’m your biggest fan.” Sergio started tearing up and said, “This is too much for me. The youth is still listening to my music.” will said, “Bro, your music is the ingredient to my favorite hip-hop group!”
will told him I wanted to do a hip-hop celebratory version of Mas Que Nada. The chorus, “Oriá raiô. Obá obá obá!”, is a sort of Brazilian-version of “La, la, la.” Sérgio taught me how millions of Africans who were brought to the Americas ended up in Brazil, and how that chant reflects the African influence on Brazil. Hanging out with Sérgio was like absorbing his brain. He was the country’s first cultural export, the Beatles of Brazil.
Much of will’s rap is about the song itself – “Rhythmically they massage ya / with hip-hop mixed up with samba.” Brazilian music is universal because the people who wrote those songs experienced poverty and appreciated joy and were able to express those complex emotions in the songs. Working with Sergio was an honor and a blessing and the realization of a dream.
