Perhaps the most touching part of the story is what happened after Souarit saw DeWitt speaking on television when Lawrence was announced as Algeria’s host city. What began as a chance connection turned into a real friendship.
“I mean it was just the wildest of circumstances. And he is now staying in my house. He got here yesterday, and he’s staying until Tuesday, and he’s just delightful.”
It’s a reminder that the World Cup isn’t just about competition. It creates opportunities for strangers to become lifelong friends.
Souarit was deeply grateful for the kindness he received.
“So I’m here; it’s like my dream became real, so I am here in Lawrence, thank you so much, Lawrence people.”
Even while proudly supporting Algeria, Souarit also cheered for his new host country during the United States match.
“I support the United States, viva United States.”
