A 17-year-old hockey player proves that a strong spirit and positive attitude can beat even the toughest odds
When 17-year-old Jackson Drum, nicknamed “Drummer,” took a hard hit and went headfirst into the boards during a hockey tournament in Canada, his life changed in an instant. “I remember trying to get up and I couldn’t move at all, and then I blacked out,” Drum said. “I was thinking ‘oh man, this is a bad injury.’ I just couldn’t believe what happened.”
Doctors told his family there was little hope. “After a bunch of hospitals denied him care, they told us to send him to long-term care instead of trying to get him rehab,” said his mother, Erica Drum. “They said he’d be on a ventilator forever and a feeding tube.”
But Jackson didn’t give up. Ten days after the accident, he moved his leg — a small sign that would grow into an incredible recovery. At Shepherd Center in Atlanta, he’s been working every day to rebuild his strength and movement. “I can move my left leg up and kick my left leg out. The right leg is just starting to come back in,” Jackson said.
His mom proudly shared, “He can move his legs, he can move both arms, he’s learned how to feed himself again.”
Doctors called it impossible, but Jackson calls it something else. “It’s definitely a miracle,” he said.
Through it all, Jackson kept a powerful mindset. “Everyone is dealt certain things that you can’t control. One of them was breaking my neck, for example. Always got to stay positive with it,” he said.
Before the accident, Jackson had scored a goal just ten minutes before the collision. His dream of playing professional hockey hasn’t disappeared — it’s only waiting for him to come back stronger.
Now, with his family by his side and his determination leading the way, Jackson’s story reminds everyone that staying positive can turn heartbreak into hope.
Jackson’s story is more than a recovery — it’s a lesson for all of us. Even when life hits hard, your attitude can make all the difference. “Stay positive” isn’t just a saying; it’s a mindset that can help you overcome anything. Jackson shows us that believing in yourself, even when others doubt you, is the true definition of strength.
