One mall and a caring community made sure every kid could dress up this Halloween
MIDLAND, MI – The Midland Mall is turning Halloween dreams into reality! To help families facing financial barriers, the mall temporarily opened a Free Halloween Costume Store this week, giving kids the chance to celebrate the spooky season without worrying about cost.
“We wanted to help take some of the financial strain off families this year — and give every child the chance to enjoy Halloween in style,” Midland Mall officials said in a Facebook post on Monday, Oct. 20. “Come shop for costumes at no cost, thanks to the kindness of our community!”
Hundreds of costumes had already been donated in the weeks leading up to the event, and by Friday, the store had helped more than 1,000 children find the perfect outfit for Halloween fun.
“The mall said the store was able to help out over 1,000 children on Friday.”
The Midland Mall wanted to make sure “no child is left without a costume,” helping families who might otherwise feel the fright of financial strain.
The event’s coordinator, Sarah Thomas, a mom of four, knows how pricey Halloween shopping can get. “It feels really good,” said Sarah Thomas, event coordinator at the Midland Mall. “I’m super excited about it.”
“I don’t think that a lot of kids get that shopping experience and be able to go out and buy a brand new costume, or even a used costume, and they just kind of have to use what they have,” said Thomas. “We’re going to give that to people this year, and it’s because of all the amazing community support in Midland.”
Originally, Thomas expected to gather only 10 to 20 costumes, but community members came together in a big way — enough to fill an entire store!
“We have some pet costumes, we have baby costumes, we have all the way up to adult costumes,” said Thomas. “Masks, hats, we have kits for pretty much any size, so they are one size fits all. I think we have something for literally everyone.”
Mall officials confirmed that the free costumes were available only for children under 18, and that kids must be present to pick out their costumes. There were even some fun pet costumes for four-legged friends to join the festivities!
Because the event was so popular, the mall reminded visitors that costumes would be available only while supplies last and asked everyone to be patient. To make sure everyone had a safe and fun experience, “only a few families will be granted access to the store at a time.”
Sarah Thomas expressed her gratitude for all who made it possible. “Tri-City Deals N Steals brought us an entire pallet of stuff,” said Thomas. “They did a huge portion of this. Thank you to them, we greatly appreciate it. And I’m sure that the community that needs these costumes are going to appreciate it even more.”
The mall is still collecting donations. Anyone who wants to contribute can place costumes in the drop boxes by the mall office or near the Target entrance — proving that even after the event, the Halloween spirit of giving continues.
The Free Costume Store at Midland Mall shows what happens when kindness meets creativity. For families feeling the pinch, this event turned financial worry into joyful excitement. Sarah Thomas and the Midland community proved that Halloween isn’t just about candy or costumes — it’s about caring for one another. When people come together for good, everyone wins.
