Shawn Allen stood behind a deputy at the funeral
As the body of Sgt. Wytasha Carter made its way through a rainy Birmingham, Alabama, Saturday, a sheriff’s deputy named Tiffany Dial stood and saluted the casket. Carter was gunned down while on duty.
“When a funeral procession was going by my building at work, I wanted to go outside and pay my respect,” Allen said. Outside, he spotted County Deputy Sheriff Tiffany Dial and just did a “nice thing.” “It was raining and I had an umbrella and she didn’t,” Allen said. “It was just a nice thing to do.”
Because of Dial’s wide-brimmed hat, she did not realize what was happening but she did notice people taking pictures, and when she later learned of the kind deed she was stunned.
“People do care about us, and that’s very uplifting,” she said. “It can be very easy to get jaded in this job, so it’s nice to see the good in people and to be reminded of that too.”
When Allen was asked why he never said anything to the deputy during the event, he said it was out of respect for the procession.
