Teen Gamer’s Online Alert Foils School Shooting Plot 2,000 Miles Away
In a chilling turn of events that could have ended in tragedy, a 2025 school shooting plot in Northern California was stopped in its tracks—thanks to the quick thinking and courage of a young gamer in Tennessee.
Two teens, aged 14 and 15, had allegedly planned to launch a mass shooting at the Evergreen Institute of Excellence in Cottonwood, California, with intentions to kill up to 100 people, according to Tehama County Sheriff Dave Kain. “This young man had the courage and heroic instincts to call our agency and notify us in order to mitigate any possible threat to our citizens and, possibly, our young people,” Sheriff Kain said. “Our investigators took that tip seriously since the beginning.”
The chat logs and images showed the two suspects posing as the Columbine shooters—mirroring the infamous 1999 tragedy. Law enforcement quickly looped in school administrators, who confirmed the identities of the teens. Search warrants turned up improvised explosive devices and firearms at their homes.
The planned date of the attack was May 9, but the suspects backed out at the last moment after one of them reportedly changed his mind. While a full motive remains unclear, one teen cited bullying as a potential cause during questioning.
Both suspects have been charged with criminal threats, possession and manufacture of destructive devices, and conspiracy to commit a felony. Officials are also exploring the charge of conspiracy to commit mass murder. Bail was denied at their court appearance.
Sheriff Kain assured the community that the threat was isolated, and noted his own confidence in the school’s safety by sending his son back to class. He also said that the Tennessee boy and his family had been invited to California to be formally recognized.
