Standing Together: Pink Shirt Day 2025 Brings Kindness to Schools
On February 26, 2025, students across British Columbia came together. They celebrated Pink Shirt Day, a nationwide initiative advocating for kindness and inclusivity. At Cataline Elementary in Williams Lake, students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 proudly wore pink shirts. The shirts had messages like “be kind to your mind,” “kind is cool,” and “you can sit with us.” They gathered in the gymnasium for an anti-bullying assembly. The event culminated in a school-wide friendship dance led by teachers Mrs. Marnie Howell and Ms. Sonya Charley.
“It’s a time for us…to get to know each other, and to acknowledge each other’s presence in a respectful way,” Howell explained. With each beat of the drum, students moved in unison, sharing smiles and handshakes as they progressed around the circle.
At Penticton Secondary School, Grade 11 and 12 students took part in an event. Students from the Be Kind Club organized the “Share some Positivi-TEA” gathering. They invited students to sip tea. Students filled out uplifting messages on tea bags. These messages were later displayed on a mural in the school’s main hallway.
“This is just a moment for people to be mindful about what anti-bullying is and what Pink Shirt Day is all about,” said Sophie Tatham, a Be Kind Club member.
Vice-Principal Mrs. Tess Riley reminded students of their role in standing against bullying: “Be an upstander, wear your pink shirt to show you stand up against bullying.” She encouraged them to speak up and seek help when needed, emphasizing, “If you see something, say something – that’s the only way it gets better.”
The message of Pink Shirt Day remains clear: kindness is powerful, inclusivity matters, and small actions can create lasting change.
