Michael and Linda Hertzog Preserve the Spirit of the “Winsching” in Modern Times
In the heart of Berks County, Pennsylvania, a centuries-old tradition whispers resilience and hope. It acts as a bridge between the past and now. Known as the “winsching” or “wish,” this Pennsylvania Dutch New Year’s ritual celebrates positivity, music, and community.
Michael Hertzog carries the mantle of the “wisher.” He travels with his wife Linda to homes and churches. There, they recite the Langschwammer Nei Yaahrs Winsch. This melodic blessing is infused with Pennsylvania Dutch and High German dialects. It is a heartfelt prayer for prosperity and health in the coming year.
The tradition’s roots trace back to German settlers. They believed that proper celebration, reverence, and generosity guarantee a fruitful year. Michael recalls his first exposure to the wish as a child, enchanted by the lively music that followed the blessing. It wasn’t until much later that Michael embraced the role of wisher. This change happened after the passing of a dear family friend. He now cherishes this role deeply.
Linda joined her husband in 2011. She adds her upright bass to their harmonious performances. Their performances include upbeat tunes like “The New Year’s March” and traditional closers like “Auld Lang Syne.” Whether at a church or a private home, the joyous atmosphere often inspires dancing and heartfelt smiles.
While fewer homes and churches get the wish today, the Hertzogs stay steadfast in preserving its significance. “It’s about seeing people happy,” Linda reflects, underscoring their commitment to this cherished ritual.
An apprentice has not yet emerged. Nevertheless, the couple continues to spread hope and harmony. They keep the Pennsylvania Dutch wish alive for generations to come.
